Her eyes droop as she shrugs. Our silent companion also barely reacts to the strange explosions happening overhead.

The drug, my mind whispers.

They’re both under the influence of the blue pill they received a few hours ago. Even if the roof over our heads collapsed and buried us, they’d still remain calm and undisturbed.

Getting to my feet, I move toward the barred gate of my cage.

Despite the effects of the tranquilizing drugs, some of the omegas are slowly rousing. They’re blinking blearily, staring all around them and at the ceiling.

The sound of running feet reaches me, followed by the shouts of female betas.

“Make sure they’re all in their cages and that everything’s locked!” I hear a loud, commanding voice.

The female soldiers come running to our cages with desperate, urgent looks on their faces. They inspect the locks on the cages one by one, sometimes double-checking, to make sure we’ll have no way to escape.

“What’s happening?” I ask as one of them comes to my cell.

She frowns without even bothering to look at me. “No questions, omega. You know the fucking rule of this place.”

“Is someone attacking us?” I ask as the woman moves toward the next cell. “Why’re you locking us in here? What happens if the whole place collapses on top of us? Do you want us to fucking die in here?”

The female beta pauses and stares at me. “Didn’t you take the blue pill today?”

“I dropped it on the floor by mistake,” I lie easily.

“The others would grab that pill and eat it even if it fell on a pile of shit,” she says. Drawing closer to the bars of my cell, she takes a closer look at me. “We’re going to handle you when this is all over. Watch out, little bitch.” She gives me a snide grin before moving away.

Her threat has no effect on me.

The Black Widow have starved me, beaten me, allowed men to use me like a toy, and forced me to live like an animal. They’ve snatched away my very humanity. The only thing they can do to me is kill me and at this point, I’d be thanking them for it.

Soon, our keepers walk out and leave us to our fate.

Listening closely, I can hear the thunderous roar of gunshots among the frequent blasts. Was someone attacking the Black Widow?

Hope bubbles within me but it’s not long before it breaks and disappears.

It doesn’t matter who’s attacking the Black Widow. Both the police and the military are filled with corrupt officials who’d salivate at the prospect of finding a vault full of omegas. They’ll pretend to rescue us and then, sell us off to the highest bidders.

Things will never change for caged-up omegas like us. We’re nothing to them other than mere animals they can abuse and extort.

Sinking back onto the floor, I wait for something to happen.

There’s no way to tell how much time passes but the roar of gunshots seems to be getting closer. It sounds like they’ve breached into these underground bunkers and making their way toward us.

I become tense and alert, wondering if the attackers would be able to get through the team of female beta soldiers to reach us.

The next round of shooting seems to be happening right outside our closed area. Almost every omega is alert now, staring in the direction of the entrance to the vault.

“What do you think is happening?” Millie asks. The haze of the drug seems to be lifting off her. She’s no longer able to ignore the thunderous roar of the guns being fired right outside these hallways.

Suddenly, a deep silence falls over us.

Millie stares at me, her blue eyes mirroring the curiosity I feel inside.

The sound of the vault door opening has us all looking toward it.

Soldiers in black, maroon, and green camo outfits filter in through the entryway. They’re holding their guns before them, ready to attack as they slowly make their way inside the hallway that leads to our cages.
