My nostrils flare again, unconsciously searching for the ripe peach fragrance.

You can’t lose control, I chide at my rising pheromones. You’re meant to protect her and the other victims of the Black Widow. You can’t go panting after her like the assholes who’ve abused her.

“I will protect her,” I vow.

“What?” Caleb asks, looking up to meet my gaze.

“Nothing,” I mutter, shaking my head.

“It’s all set,” he says. “I’ve sent you the location of the rehab facility where you’ll take them.”

“I’ve got it,” I reply, checking the message he’s sent me.

“You’ve got to take them out of here safely. Clear the route through which you’ll guide them into the vans. This is going to be a separate mission. Anyone who’s not part of it should be kept away. Remember to allow only the most trustworthy of your men to help you with this task.”

I nod grimly. “Don’t worry, Caleb. I will protect them with my life.”

The northern part of the woods that surround the Black Widow’s hideout is surprisingly untouched by our raid. None of the trees show signs of damage. No shrapnel litters the forest floor. Not a single drop of blood coats the fallen leaves.

After searching the area, we found a secret tunnel that leads directly into the vault where the omegas were being kept. I’m guessing this is the spot that the Black Widow used to bring the captured women inside the underground bunkers.

Despite treating them like animals, the assholes knew the value of these captive omegas. They didn’t allow the rest of their numbers to come in contact with them. Only their elite alpha leaders and their customers got to touch these women.

“Captain, we’re ready to bring them out,” a deep voice speaks from behind me.

Turning around, I spot Sergeant Quinn, one of my most trusted men.

“Did they resist any of your orders?”

A grim expression settles on the man’s face. “No, Sir,” he says. “They all seem to be under the effects of a drug. Or maybe it’s the lack of food and fucking sunshine that killed these poor women’s souls. There’s no resistance in them. Hell, there’s no fear in their eyes. We could be leading them to the gallows and they’d still follow us without a word.”

“We found some young girls and boys among them,” says a younger soldier who’s standing a few feet behind Quinn. “They’re the same too. All zombie-looking and weird.” A deeply disturbed look spreads on his face. “We can only imagine what they must’ve gone through to become this way.”

The men around me have accompanied me to battlefields several times. We’ve watched our brothers die before our eyes. We’ve also coated our hands with the enemy’s blood many times over.

And yet, we can’t help the discomfort we feel at the sight of those emaciated women in dirty rags with hollow, soulless eyes.

“Can you imagine the kind of fuckers who went down there to rut these omegas?” Quinn asks with a disgusted look on his face. “Those women are so drugged up, they don’t even know what’s happening around them. You’d have to be real fucked up to get aroused by such zombies.”

“They’re the people who’ve been supporting the Widow’s beliefs,” I remind him. “This is the kind of society they want to recreate. The weak would be extorted out of their very humanity to serve the elite alpha population.”

“They can keep dreaming,” Quinn scoffs.

I give a grim nod. “We’ll destroy the Black Widow and every bastard who’s been supporting them,” I vow.

Aurora Bailey’s face resurfaces in my mind. I desperately pray that I’m mistaken, that the woman I saw in the underground vault was someone else. Even though she’s practically a stranger to me, I don’t want to see her as one of the captive victims.

I glance at my watch before gesturing toward Quinn. “The transport vehicles have arrived. It’s time to bring them up and help them inside the vans.”

“Yes, Sir.”

A dozen armed soldiers stand behind me as I wait for the omegas to be brought out in the open. I’ve purposely kept the group small to abide by Caleb’s instructions.

The lesser people know about these vulnerable omegas, the better. They need lots of help to be able to rehabilitate themselves into our society. We want them to have their privacy while they work through the years of mental trauma they’ve suffered at the Black Widow’s hands.
