The men stir as the first woman is helped through the manhole. Her sunken eyes and thin face make it difficult for me to gauge her age. She squints against the faint morning sunshine before staring up at the blue sky. Tears stream down her face and her lips tremble but not a sob escapes her. Swallowing hard, she bows her head and meekly follows the soldier guiding her toward the van in the distance.

One by one, the other women follow her. Most of their reactions are the same. Their new freedom means nothing to them. They’d still follow the orders of the men around them without protest.

A group of children are brought up next. At first, they’re just as oblivious as their older companions but as they walk over the grass, something changes within them.

Their expressions slowly turn into curiosity and then, excitement.

Excited squeals erupt from a few of them as they stare up at the sky and the trees with wide-eyed wonder. Next second, they start skipping and cheering.

Their excitement is infectious. The other children seem to jolt out of their dazed states and start looking around them. A few of them go down on their knees, sampling the soil and loose stones at their feet.

Have they never been brought outside? The thought crosses my mind as one of the boys licks his sandy fingers.

“Hey, don’t do that!” I call out and hurry toward the kid in an instant.

A gasp escapes the child and he’s suddenly scooting away from me, his eyes wide with fear.

“Hey, I didn’t mean to scare you,” I say immediately, hating how gruff my voice sounds. Clearing my throat, I try again. “I’m sorry, kid. Here, look. It’s just sand and soil. You could get sick from eating them.”

The boy lowers his face between his knees and cowers.

The other children who’d been excitedly exploring the trees and bushes have come to a halt. The joy and excitement are instantly erased from their faces. They huddle together and shake with fear.

“I feel like a fucking monster,” I grate through clenched teeth.

“It’s not your fault, Sir,” Quinn says in a grim voice. “These children have been taught to fear men like us. I hope the fuckers rot in hell for what they’ve done to them.”

“Be gentle with these kids,” I say as our men proceed to usher the children to the van.

“Don’t worry, Sir. We’ll make sure they’re safe and protected,” he says before walking away.

There’s very little fuss with the kids. Even though most of them look like they’re below twelve years of age, they’re unnervingly obedient and follow instructions better than the men in my unit!

“How many more to go?” I ask.

“About a dozen or so more women,” Quinn answers.

I nod and wait, hoping to catch a glimpse of the woman I’d mistaken for Aurora Bailey.

It’s a while before she appears through the manhole.

“That’s the last of them,” one of the soldiers hollers.

I look closely as the woman moves closer to me.

To my horror, there’s no mistaking her. The thin woman dressed in dirty ragsisAurora Bailey!

She refuses to look at me and suddenly, makes a run toward a grove of maple of trees in the distance.

“Hey, lady! Wait up! Don’t run!” Quinn shouts after her.

Aurora’s sudden dash takes us all by such surprise that we’re all stunned for a second. None of the other omegas tried to escape, allowing us to grow lax.

“Look after the others,” I bark out a hasty command and run after Aurora.

The fragrance of peaches wafts into my nostrils. I breathe in deeply, detecting the familiar hints of vanilla and clove. My dick throbs hard, sending tendrils of heat throughout my body.

My wild instincts jerk awake, looking for the source of the delicious scent. Fire erupts deep in my belly, urging me to look for the omega who’s making my senses go crazy.
