A sliver of confusion spreads through me. Why are my impulses flaring so wildly at the mere whiff of her scent?

Rounding the row of maples, I finally spot her.

“Aurora, wait!” I shout. “Please stop or you could hurt yourself.”

She comes to a skidding halt and whirls around to face me. Her silvery eyes stare right at me as a desperate expression spreads through her face.

Without warning, she suddenly turns around, and sprints.

A growl escapes me at the sight. My body reacts to her perfume and her desperate attempt to outrun me. A primal instinct takes hold of me, propelling me forward.

Her weak legs are no match for my superior strength.

I reach her within seconds and wrap my arms around her waist.

“Stop,” I growl. My entire body vibrates as I hold her tightly. Her perfume hits me directly, wrapping around my senses and drowning all logical thoughts from my head.

A scoff escapes the slight woman in my arms. “I knew it,” she says, her voice coated with so much bitterness it breaks through the haze of my sudden arousal. “You and that commander in black were putting up a fucking front. You don’t want to help any of us. You’re just like the men who tortured us. We’re nothing but pieces of ass for you to fuck and sell.”

Her harsh words bring me back to my senses. What the hell was I doing chasing her like a wolf in heat?

Heat...

The word registers in my mind as I stare at the petite woman before me. Clouds of her addictive perfume waft toward me in the passing breeze. My body reacts to it and it’s a struggle to keep control over myself.

A sudden realization dawns on me. I finally understand why my instincts were triggered by her scent.

Aurora is dangerously close to going into heat. Her perfume has grown so strong and potent that it’s affecting me too.

She’s breathing hard and a hot flush is spreading through her cheeks and neck. She’s so desperate to escape that she’s become blind to her body’s signals.

She’s already in heat, I realize. It’s already too late to give her suppressants or anything that could ease her through it.

Omegas going through a natural heat need an alpha to help them through it. Without someone to satiate her body’s unnatural sexual hunger, she’ll end up going through tremendous pain.

Pity wells up inside me. Even though she’s escaped the clutches of the Black Widow, her traumatic ordeals are not over yet.

“Let go of me!” she snaps, elbowing me in the ribs.

“Aurora, stop,” I plead, holding onto her.

She stills. “You know who I am?”

I nod. “You’re Philip Bailey’s daughter.”

The shock in her glass-colored eyes tells me I didn’t mistake her for someone else. She’s truly Aurora Bailey.

“I want to help you,” I say in the sincerest voice I can muster. “I don’t know what happened to you or how you ended up in a place like that, but trust me. I’ll take you home. I won’t let anyone hurt you again.”

She scoffs, kicking my shin hard. “You’re an alpha. Why would you help me when you can lock me up and fuck me whenever you please?”

Her harsh tone stabs my heart. She thinks I’m the same as those vile men who treated her like an animal. I swallow the sudden choke in my throat and try comforting her again. “I’m not like the people who hurt you.”

“Yeah, right.”

“I mean it. We’re going to help you and every single omega we rescued today. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, we won’t let anyone hurt you.”

“Then, let me go.”
