“It won’t be long before I step into the game myself,” he says as our waiter proceeds to pour wine into our glasses. “I’ve finally managed to secure the funds and support I need to stand in an election. That bitch will soon regret mocking me.”

“Forget about Kaida,” I say hurriedly. “She’s not worth your attention.”

When he continues to look grim, I try turning the conversation in another direction.

“This is great news, though!” I say, grinning widely. “You could’ve asked my dad to help you out but I guess you wanted to do this all on your own. I’m so proud of you, Jake. It makes our anniversary even more special.”

“Are you truly proud of me?” he asks with a strange look on his face.

“Don’t mind what Kaida says,” I say at once. “She has no idea what she’s talking about. She doesn’t understand the love we feel for each other.”

He scoffs and swallows his wine in one gulp. His fingers tighten around the slender stem as he silently seethes.

“Forget about her,” I say, wishing her verbal jabs wouldn’t ruin my date with Jake. “Let’s celebrate our special day. This evening is all about us.”

My words distract him immediately. A slow smile spreads on his lips as he stares at me. “This evening is all aboutyou, darling. You’ll never forget the surprise that I’ve planned for you.”

“A surprise?” I say as a shard of unease pierces through me.

Jake enjoys bondage and sadistic games in the bedroom.

He’s always been honest about his preferences, promising me that I’d come to enjoy his games of dominance, but so far, I’ve failed to experience any pleasure from his acts that serve me nothing but pain.

Despite my timidness, Jake has always been patient with me.

That’s why I try harder to please him. It’s my biggest insecurity that Jake will be disappointed in me if I don’t participate in these games with enthusiasm.

“You trust me, don’t you?” he whispers. “You know I’ll never hurt you, baby.”

I nod earnestly, eager to please my alpha. His pleasure is mine. I’d do anything to make him come screaming my name in bed.

Kaida is an omega too but she hasn’t chosen a mate yet. She hasn’t tasted the feeling of absolute satisfaction when you please your alpha. When she does, she’ll know that it’s worth the pain and the bruises.

“If you’re not hungry, we can open my surprise right away,” I say, smiling at him.

Surprise flickers in his eyes. “I’m so glad to see you didn’t let that stupid omega influence you.”

I internally cringe at his dislike for Kaida but stay silent.

“I’m so proud of the omega I’ve created,” he says with a dark gleam in his eyes. “You have no idea how valuable you are to me.”

“I’m yours,” I say in the sincerest tone I can muster.

Reaching across the table, he holds my chin and brushes his thumb over my lips. “You’re perfect, Rory.”

A smile spreads on my lips at his praise.

“Come with me,” he says, withdrawing away and getting to his feet.

I take the hand he offers me.

“Oh, wait!” I mutter, remembering the bouquet of roses he’d brought me. “Let me grab this too."

Jake wraps an arm around my waist and pulls me against him. The diners around us stare as we walk out of the hall and enter the inner lobby of the hotel.

“Aren’t you going to grab the key?” I ask as we walk past the reception desk.

“I’ve got it right here,” he says, patting his chest and leading me to the elevators at the end of the luxurious hallway.
