“No, I’m not,” she says, scraping at her arms and neck. Her nails leave red marks on her wet, raw skin. “I still feel so dirty.”

“You’re not dirty. Do you have any idea how long you’ve been under the shower? It’s been over an hour already. Just come out of the tub and dry yourself.”

“I’ll come out when I’m done,” she says, going back to raking her nails over her arm, further damaging the bruised skin.

“Rory, stop,” I say, grabbing her wrists. “You’re hurting yourself.”

“Just leave me alone.” She struggles in my hold and suddenly bursts into tears. Her words turn incoherent but the sharp sting in them tells me she’s still cursing at me.

Moving away, I grab a towel and go back to the bathtub.

“It’s going to be okay,” I say, kneeling before her. “I’ll make sure you’re safe.”

The fight goes out of her as she slumps against the tub. Moving closer, I wrap the towel around her petite body and lift her in my arms.

The tip of her nose skims along my neck. “You smell so good.”

A wry chuckle escapes me. “At least, there’s one thing that you like about me.”

Entering the bedroom, I walk toward the bed and lay her down among the pillows. Just as I’m about to step away, she grabs my wrist.

“Don’t go,” she says, tightening her hold on me. “Stay with me, please.”

The desperate look in her glass-colored eyes makes me agree readily. “All right, then. I’ll stay. Just let me grab you some clothes. I don’t want you getting cold.”

“I don’t need clothes,” she says, flinging the towel away and sitting up boldly. A lusty look descends into her silvery-gray eyes. “Come on, Seth. Don’t you want to use me some more?”

Her jab sends an ache through me. “I’ve never used you, Rory.” Moving her hand away from my wrist, I move away from the bed.

“Seth, wait!” She slides to the edge of the bed and clutches my shirt. “Don’t go...please.” A heavy breath escapes her. “I think I need you again.”

A deep flush has spread over her cheeks. Her eyes have a glassy, lusty sheen to them. Clouds of her thick, heavy perfume fill up the small bedroom, teasing my senses.

Her heat must be demanding her to mate with an alpha. If she doesn’t fulfill the urges of her body, she’ll soon start experiencing those painful cramps again.

“Do you need me to take care of you?” I ask.

She nods as a conflicted expression comes over her. “It’s not just that.” A dejected look chases away the lusty haze in her eyes. “I’m scared to be alone. I hate asking you for it but can you stay with me? Shitty thoughts race in my mind when I’m alone. I don’t want to keep thinking about the things they did to me. I don’t want that horror to stay with me for the rest of my life.”

The omegas we rescued from those hellish underground cages were beyond traumatized. Their senses were so muddled up, they followed our orders without a single protest.

I can only imagine the pain Rory suffered at the hands of those cruel mercenaries. The only thing that makes me thankful is to realize that she didn’t shatter under their torture. Unlike the other captive omegas, Rory’s been able to keep a firm grasp over her mind.

It’s almost a relief to hear her curses and jabs. They tell me she still has the spirit to fight for her life. I want to protect this last spark of hope in her so that she doesn’t become as broken as the rest of those poor souls.

I sit down on the edge of the bed and wrap my arms around her. “You’re going to be okay,” I tell her. “It’ll take time to forget everything but you’ll heal.”

She looks calmer than before, so I ask her the question that’s been knocking around in my head since the moment I found her in that underground vault.

“How did you end up there?” I ask.

She shakes her head. “I don’t want to talk about it,” she says, looking away at once. Her fingers clutch at the sheet, showing me how much it bothers her to tell me about the asshole who sent her into that hell.

“That’s okay,” I say gently. “You don’t have to tell anything right away.”

She glances back at me, studying me closely. “Will you promise to keep my secret?” she whispers.

“What secret are you talking about?”
