I’m no expert in military ranks and positions but I doubt a soldier makes enough to afford such luxurious clothes, makeup, and jewelry. Will Seth go into debt trying to help me?

Stop worrying about him, I chide myself. He should mean nothing to you.

The thought makes me choke up. Swallowing hard, I look away from the mirror and head back into the bedroom.

“Hey, you’re here,” I say, finding Seth in the room.

He stuffs the last of my things into a suitcase before closing it.

Emotions well up inside me as I stare at his broad back. He’s taking care of every aspect of my ruse.

Turning away, I brush away a tear that falls from my eyes.

“You’re all packed up,” he says, glancing my way.

Refusing to look at him, I pick up a matching pair of red stilettos and put them on.

“Wow,” he breathes when I finally turn around to face him. “You look beautiful, Rory.”

The sincerity shining in his eyes makes my heart throb. A warm flush spreads on my cheeks, making me look away.

Seth moves closer. Hooking a finger under my chin, he gently lifts my face so that I’m forced to look up at him.

“You’re seriously beautiful,” he says in a deep voice that reverberates through me. “It’s barely been a week but there’s been an amazing change in your appearance. Make sure you eat your meals on time, stay positive and smile a lot. You’d go back to looking like your old self in no time.”

Shyness spreads through me, making me squirm. When he says I look beautiful, I truly believe him.

Disgust and self-loathing were all I felt during my captivity. The men who touched me left me feeling sick to my stomach. Bitterness ran in my veins with every breath I breathed in those hellish underground halls.

I never thought I could get back the will to live again.

The broken omega in me wants to drown in Seth’s warm eyes. No matter how much I want to keep my heart locked away, it’s already decided to trust him.

“Are you ready to go home?”

I hesitate. A part of me wants to continue staying here with Seth. This small cottage in the midst of the woods has been a haven for me, rescuing me from the hellish depths of my own mind.

“Yeah,” I force myself to say even though I don’t truly feel ready.

He gives me a warm smile, walks to the corner, and easily picks up the suitcase. “Come on, then. It’s time for us to go.”

I nod.

While Seth heads out, I take one last look at the room.

The bed is fashioned into a cozy nest with mounds of cushions and thick blankets. Red and white candles are spread in every corner. Their subtle vanilla fragrance still lingers in the room, mingling with my peach and clove.

I feel a twinge in my chest. This modest humble room means more to me than all the luxurious hotel suites my dad can buy me.

“Rory?” Seth’s voice filters through the open doorway. “Are you okay up there?”

“Yeah, I’m coming!”

I walk out of the room, down the staircase, and into the living room area. My gaze sweeps over the old-fashioned furniture, memorizing every little detail.

Since Seth has already walked out of the house, I don’t linger for long and hurry after him.

This is the first time I’ve stepped outside the house. Even though Seth never locked me in, I preferred to stay indoors, either having hot, heavy sex with him or recuperating afterward. The bedroom upstairs became my nest, making me feel so safe and warm that I rarely felt the urge to leave it.
