With a start, I realize that Seth didn’t ask me to do anything during the week I stayed with him. He shopped, cooked, and cleaned without a word of complaint while I stayed cooped up in my nest the whole time.

“How could he keep letting me treat him like crap?” I mutter to myself.

No other alpha would’ve done the things he did for me. I kept accusing him of taking advantage of me, but in all honesty, he was the one doing me a favor. He said I was beautiful but I’ve never felt uglier.

It’s barely been a few hours since he left me and I’m already missing him.

Giving myself a mental shake, I try to ignore my stupid heart and push open the door to my room.

Emotions surge through me as I see that nothing’s changed over the months that I’ve stayed away from home. The same old cushions adorn my bed. My old plushies still take pride of place by the bedside table. Every piece of furniture has stayed in the very same place.

The familiarity sends a rush of warmth through me.

Walking inside, I move toward the collection of photographs that covers one of the walls.

Kaida’s face is in almost all of them. Every cherished memory with my friends from the omega academy is here. I stare at my grinning face in them and wonder whether I’d ever be able to laugh and smile like my old self.

Jake and the Black Widow tore out my heart and soul, leaving me an empty shell.

A sob is wrenched out of me as I sink to my knees and start bawling like a crazed animal. With no one else around me, I succumb to my pain and let it all out.

Deep, hard sobs wrack through me, threatening to shatter my weak body.

I don’t know how long it lasts but when I finally calm down, I realize I’m lying on the carpeted floor. Pushing myself to sit up, I look around the cozy room. There’s no speck of dust anywhere.

Another realization jolts through me. Even though I’ve been absent from home for months, Dad and Heather kept my room clean. Even the old, ratty cushions that take up a corner of the bed look neat and well cared for.

Deep exhaustion takes hold of me. Without bothering to change out of my dress, I move toward the bed and get under the covers.

The subtle fragrance of the washing liquid on the sheets is so familiar, I’m easily lulled into a slumber. Closing my eyes, I finally allow myself to relax.

I’m truly home now, the thought crosses my mind as sleep overtakes my senses.

“Move your feet, bitch!” An annoyed female voice barks at me.

“Please, don’t do this to me,” I plead, falling at the guard’s feet. Tears stream down my face and I’m barely able to breathe through the hard, suffocating sobs that choke me. “I can’t bear it. I’ll die before you take me up on that stage.”

There’s no pity in the guard’s cold hard eyes as she grips a handful of my hair. Her strength overpowers my weak body, making it easy for her to drag me along the sparsely lit underground hallway.

My heart thuds painfully in my chest. The female guard is about to take me up on stage where three or four alphas are waiting to force themselves on me. I can hear the loud, impatient jeers of the crowd that has gathered on the other side of the room. They’re all here to watch me get taken by their commanders.

“Let me go,” I shout desperately, struggling against her hold as she leads me up a small flight of stairs. “Please, please, please don’t take me there. I’ll do anything but not that. Please,” I scream out in terror. “Don’t!”

The female guard gives me a massive shove, sending me sprawling on the floor. My slight body slides through the flimsy curtain that blocks the backstage and ends up right on the stage.

A huge cheer goes through the crowd.

“That’s a new face!”

“She’s so fucking beautiful!”

“And sexy!”

“I’ve never seen a dark-haired omega before! Fuck, she’s gorgeous!”
