“That’s going to put a strain on our friendship,” he says, a grin spreading on his luscious lips. “I was thinking of buying this one too.”

His easy smile makes me wary immediately. “We’re not friends,” I say coldly.

His sky-blue eyes dance with mischief. “Well, this is the longest conversation I’ve had since I stepped into this boring party. I’m going to say we’re friends.”

“You don’t even know my name.”

“What if Idoknow your name, Aurora?” His grin matches the mischief in his eyes.

I take a closer look at him, wondering if I’ve met him before. His tall, imposing presence is enough for me to guess he’s an alpha. Thereissomething familiar about him but I can’t quite place him.

Soft chuckles escape him. He’s thoroughly enjoying my confusion.

My cheeks warm as my heart starts beating hard. I can’t believe I’m letting myself fall for the charms of this strange alpha when it’s barely been two days since I returned home.

It’s all because of Seth, I realize. He made me want to trust people again.

But, this man before me isn’t Seth. No matter how eager I feel to keep talking to him, an old fear rises within me.

Don’t get close to him, a warning voice whispers in my head.Don’t trust him. He’s an alpha!

“Aurora?” he says, stepping closer to me. “Are you okay?”

“Stop,” I say, squeezing my eyes shut and throwing my arms out.

My hands spread on his hard, muscular chest. Opening my eyes, I stare up at him. We’re standing so close, I can feel his warm breath fanning my face.

Swallowing hard, I stumble backward.

“Hey, wait up!” he shouts after me as I break into a run and head toward the exit gate.

I’m so intent on escaping the handsome stranger that I end up mindlessly walking around the upstairs hallways. At one point, I don’t even know where I am.

Hoping the stranger has left the exhibit room by now, I decide to go back there to put down a bid for the lily painting.

Something catches my attention as I begin walking down the deserted corridor. In the quiet stillness, I make out the sound of a second pair of footsteps right behind me.

Halting in my steps, I turn around.

Cold washes over me as I stare into the face of a familiar devil. He’s one of the men who forced himself on me the night Jake abandoned me.

Surprise flickers into his eyes as he gazes at me.

“I wasn’t mistaken,” he says in a low, soft voice that grates on my nerves. “It’s really you, Aurora.”

Fear and disgust rise within me, rooting me to the spot.

“How are you here?” he asks, stepping closer to me. “You were supposed to have been shipped off to the Black Widow.”

Vivid memories of what he and his companions did to me come rushing back. The fear and helplessness I felt that night spread through me, paralyzing me.

His hand grazes along my arm as he leans in.

Seth, I silently scream his name as my body freezes at the man’s touch.

Suddenly, his face flashes before my eyes and a flare of energy bursts through me. My mind clears at once, giving me the strength to slap the asshole’s hand off me.

“Don’t be rude, darling,” he says, injecting dominance into his voice.
