The ring of telephones cut through the constant, dull chatter of the admin quarters. My gaze is fixed on the computer screen before me but my mind is lost in a faraway cabin in the woods.

Is Rory okay? The question constantly churns in my head. I left her outside her home two days ago. She should be feeling better with her family and friends around her but I can’t bring myself to be reassured.

Rory plans to hide the hell she went through as a captive. Can they truly help her without knowing the trauma she suffered?

I am the only person in the whole wide world who has any idea about the hell she lived through. Would she be okay without me by her side?

A constant ache pinches my heart. I’d hoped my longing would disappear after distancing myself from her but my feelings for her keep growing stronger. Her absence makes me think of her constantly.

You promised to stay away from her, I remind myself.Have you become so weak you can’t keep a simple promise to Rory?

“Captain, these are the reports sent by Sergeant Wilson,” a female voice speaks up, jerking me out of my thoughts.

Carla, the associate secretary, sets down a tall stack of folders on my desk. She’s a young alpha woman and is one of the few people in the admin office who approaches me without any trepidation.

Her fine eyebrows lift up as she gazes at the mountain of folders on my table. “You’re literally going to be buried in paperwork,” she says with a disapproving stare. “We’re going to need some of these documents looked through and signed to stay on schedule. Could you please hurry up, Captain?”

A heavy sigh escapes me. “Of course.”

She doesn’t look convinced. Muttering an impatient “hmph”, she strides away from my desk.

I reach for the topmost folder that she brought me. A groan escapes me as my shoulder protests the sudden movement.

My dads punished me with corporal punishment along with confining me to a desk job for several months. There’s always a price to pay for abandoning your duty without good reason. If I told them where I was over the past week, I’d have to tell them everything about Rory.

Rory’s secret is safe with me. I stayed quiet during the interrogation, silently accepting the harsh punishments my fathers decided for my transgressions.

I want Rory’s future to remain untainted by the past. She deserves a fair chance to live her life without any complications.

The aches and burns from my punishment are bearable when I think of her being happy and safe with her family.

“Look at them! Don’t they lookexactlythe same?!” A female voice squeals loudly.

“Oh, I wish they’d come hereevery day!” cried out another.

“Since their brother’s working here, we might just be lucky to have them here every day!”

“They’re so handsome I coulddie!”

“Did you see that? They winked at me!”

Loud whispers and giggles break out all over the admin office. I don’t even have to look up from my document to see why these women are suddenly acting so wildly.

“Sethy ol’ boy! Where are you, Bruh?” A loud male voice shouts over the female giggles.

I stay quiet and focused on the page I’m reading.

“Hey, hey, big brother,” calls out another familiar voice. “There you are!”

A sigh escapes me as I drop the document onto the table. There’s no point in attempting to work while my twin brothers are here.

“What do you guys want?” I ask in a deep voice as I stare up at their identical faces.

“We want you, of course,” says Oliver with a wide grin. His eyes are alight with mischief as he leans in and kisses the top of my head.
