"Well, I'm an investigative journalist, so I've been to quite a few places."

She led me out to the balcony, and we sat down on two chairs, sipping on glasses of sweet tea. Outside, the balmy evening grew cool.

"Tell me about some of your adventures."

Her voice had a mellow ring to it. I couldn't help casting long looks at her from the side. She had one of her hands in her hair, separating its waves.

She hummedMoon Riveras she drank her tea. The low tune drifted out and touched me in the weirdest fuckin’ places before getting lost in the wind.

I leaned back in my chair and took a long sip. Good thing I'd stayed in touch with Ramsay from Unit Two. He'd actually gone on to become an investigative journalist.

We relied on him for intel from time to time. And the stories he had to tell were pretty darn great, too.

"I had to go all the way to the Amazon rainforest one time. Illegal logging. The mosquitos were about as big as my thumb. The heat was so thick you could cut it with a knife. The sights, sounds, smells ... it was like nothing I'd experienced before.

"One day, I was walking through the forest, and I heard this rustling above me. Next thing I know, a group of monkeys come swinging down from the branches, chattering away. I tell ya, it was like living myJumanjiobsession. That probably makes me sound very old."

"Hell no, I loveJumanji. What if a game could actually do that?"

"I wish. I'd definitely wager on it if it could take me to Hogwarts."

"Pity your job won't get you there. You could have found a whole other Chamber of Secrets."

Beautiful and smart.

I reckoned I had done given up hope on findin' someone who could ever match my vibe. Seemed like maybe they were just born a little late.

"The monkeys did take my night vision goggles, though. I still miss ‘em."

"Are they the ones they use in the army? Wow, that must have been something."

Oh, okay. So this girl knows a bit about the military. I'll have to be careful.

"How d'you know this?" I asked, keeping my tone casual.

"The NVG? I'm a history nut. I can't tell you how many books I've read on DEVGRU and what they've achieved."

I grinned at that. It always felt nice to hear good things being said about our men.

She turned in my direction and smiled a little.

And my heart hammered. She looked so impossibly adorable, and I just—how could this girl, was it possible—oh, for cryin' out loud.

I wanted to reach out and hold her. But if I went and did that for reasons even I couldn't understand, she'd be within her rights to really thump me.

She looked like the type to do it, too.

I cleared my throat and took another sip. "I've investigated political corruption in Russia, too. Drug trafficking in Colombia. And I spent some time in North Korea."

Thank God I'd actually been to all these places, even if for other reasons.

Juniper piled her tumbling brown hair into her hands and pulled it up in a messy bun. She fixed it with a pen. Her entire expression during this exercise screamed unawareness of just how ... just how she touched me.

It was cute.

She was adorable.

And I realized I did not want to leave.
