There were people who let their past consume every inch of their existence until it became their entire identities.

I, in time, decided the world had more people like Gloria who were waiting for a rescue team to save them from the rubble of their lives. And that was the moment I was reborn.

It would happen again when we lost our best friend and Grizzly offered me an out. I would follow that man into the gates of Mordor if it came down to that.I would lay my life down to uphold his.

So, if he told us we had to meet thatpendejo, I would suck it up and sit in this damned office, surrounded by frosted glass windows and assistants with plastic smiles and silicone tits, and pray I'd make it without shooting anyone.

Hunter Montgomery had called us to his office in downtown Oakmont.

And I had maintained a stoic silence the entire way here, which was saying something because Paladin had grumbled the whole way.

When we reached the unexpectedly tall building, we were led inside by Assistant One. I'd forgotten her name already. She took us to a waiting room and supplied us with three cups of lukewarm coffee. I drank mine, waiting for the star of the fucking show to turn up.

"Gentlemen."

It was like someone had poured syrup over a plate of nails. Hunter Montgomery strutted in like an off-duty porn star, a sickeningly saccharine smile on his face.

There was also a hint of something that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

A lingering undercurrent of danger.

"Montgomery," Cap replied, his tone still pleasant. "I know you've been waiting for an update. We've established contact with the Target."

"Oh, I'm sure you'veestablished contact."

I did not like the way he purred those words out. Instinctively, my hand reached for the gun tucked in the back of my jeans.

Paladin shot me a look of warning.

I liked packing heat, and he did not. But this was a free state, and I had every fucking right to protect myself and the people I called my own.

Sometimes, you just couldn't make things work with words.

That was when guns helped.

It also felt nice knowing I could blow off thistonto'shead. He was a living, breathing example of verbal diarrhea, all mouth and no fucking trousers.

"However, I have not called you to discuss what you have done on the case. In fact, I think sometimes, it is helpful to be shown the way."

Grizzly's poker face was in sharp contrast to the purple anger on Paladin's. Deep inside, I knew both of them wanted to collectively thump the shit out of this pansy.

Montgomery was passively insulting our ability to catch Juniper at what he thought was her game.

Right now, it felt a lot like he was the only one playing. What basis did he have for all of this anyway, except that he was a jealous littleratawith daddy issues?

He walked over to the other end of his office, where the walls were nothing but long panels of glass. It gave me the illusion of falling.

For people like him, it was nothing but a power trip, a way to gaze out at the world from his high chair, scream, and kick up a fuss if anything indicated people outside were happier than him.

Maybe he hadn't been spanked enough as a child.

"Women, gentlemen, are very sly creatures. I'm sure you have met many dangerous men in your operative years, but I can confidently tell you that women are a world apart."

The fucker did not need to tell us that. We had seen the faces of women who married danger and made it their discipline.

We had looked into the eyes of those forced into terrorist outfits because they made the choice to fall in love.

They'd been misled and dumped in a world where jihad and blood sacrifices were considered divine.
