Like a spoiled brat.

At the echo of my mother’s voice, I ducked my head, covering my face with my hands.

“Hey, hey,” Axel murmured, wrapping his arms around me. “It’s okay, baby girl. I’ll take you back to my place, okay?”

I tilted my chin up to look at him but my thoughts must have been written all over my face. Axel shook his head slightly.

“No sex. I’ll sleep on the couch.”

I stifled a small noise of disappointment and buried my face in Axel’s chest, sliding my arms around his middle. The steady beat of his heart was comforting and my eyes slipped closed. He smelled amazing—soft leather, black coffee, and sharp alcohol—and if it was up to me, I would never move from this spot right here.

Axel rubbed his hands over my back and up my arms, resting his chin on top of my head. I let him lead me to his bike and when he buckled my helmet on without any trouble, I frowned at him.

“Your hands aren’t shaky,” I said.

“That’s a good thing since I’m about to drive you home,” Axel replied.

“But you’re drunk,” I pointed out, head wobbling with emphasis.

He chuckled and placed his hands at my waist to prevent me from falling off his motorcycle.

“No, sweetheart, you’re the one who was chugging alcohol like Cinderella staring down the midnight clock. I had one shot of whiskey. That was it.”

I frowned harder, squinting at him.

“Why?”

Axel cupped my chin.

“I promised to help. That includes protecting you, keeping you safe. I can’t do that if I’m drunk.”

God, I thought. He’s so damn gorgeous. And then he had to say something like that—hot, sexy, andresponsible.

“Too bad you took sex off the table,” I replied, only slurring a little bit. “Because after an answer like that, I would have given you the sloppiest, messiest, bestest blowjob of your life.”

Axel raised his eyebrows, amused.

“Bestest?”

I nodded, even though the gesture made me a little dizzy.

“I might not know how to come, but I’m damn good at giving head.”

Oh my God, stop talking! Just shut up!

Axel’s amused expression faded into a frown of concern.

“We should probably unpack this when you’re sober,” he replied. “For now, let’s manage that god awful hangover you’re going to have in the morning.”

I barely remembered the ride to Axel’s apartment as I dozed against his back, my cheek pressed between his shoulder blades.

Then Axel was talking softly to me, coaxing me to my feet and into his apartment. The next thing I knew, he tucked me into bed, pulling the cloud-like gray sheets over me. His fingers combed lightly through my hair, removing the pins that had been digging into my scalp all night.

When Axel started to pull away, I caught his wrist, looking up at him. I was so tired and drunk that he was just a blur. And yet, I still recognized the warmth of his skin beneath my fingertips.

“Thank you,” I whispered. “I felt…free tonight.”

The last thing I remembered was Axel leaning over me as he pressed a kiss to my forehead.
