“Beth,” he said, and I loved the way he said my name. Low and deep in his chest, with a liquid heat to it. Almost like the rumble of a tiger’s purr. “You have no idea how tempting that suggestion is.”

Oh, trust me,I thought. I know exactly how tempting it is.

“But I think you’ve already had enough excitement for one night,” he added.

Now that Axel mentioned it, the reality of my situation began to creep in. Lionel had left me high and dry. I pulled away with a sigh.

“You’re right. I should probably call an Uber.”

When I retrieved my phone from my purse, Axel held out his hand.

“Let me give you my number. I’ll be your ride.”

I smirked and passed my phone to him.

“That was very smooth.”

He chuckled. “You were the one who waltzed up to me out of nowhere and demanded to be kissed. Apparently, we’re doing this backwards. Hot and heavy make out first, exchange names next, then swap phone numbers.”

I bit the inside of my cheek to hide a pleased smile when I realized that Axel wanted to see me again.

“What about your friends?” I asked, gesturing to his biker buddies lingering by the bar and grill. “I’ve pulled you away from them long enough already.”

Axel snorted and returned my phone to me.

“I’m sure those boneheads are enjoying the show. They can manage without me for a while longer. Wait here while I get my bike so they don’t pester you with questions.”

I watched as he jogged back to the cluster of motorcycles. He exchanged a few words with his friends, but they were too far away for me to hear what was being said.

Then Axel mounted a sleek motorcycle, the same color as the darkest chocolate fudge. He rolled toward me and came to a slow stop, dangling a helmet from two fingers.

“Have you ever ridden a Harley before?”

I shook my head as I buckled the helmet.

“It’s my first time.”

Axel nodded.

“You’re going to get chilly in that outfit.”

He reached back toward a set of packs on his bike and pulled out a crisp, gleaming black leather jacket. Lifting a finger, Axel gestured for me to turn around. When I did, he draped his jacket over my shoulders, waiting for me as I slid my arms into the sleeves. I couldn’t resist inhaling a deep breath of the earthy leather scent. The weight of the fabric was comforting, like a hug.

Although if I had a choice, I would have preferred to be wrapped up in Axel’s arms, warmed by his body heat.

“Just hold onto me,” he said, taking my elbow and guiding me to face him again. “You’ll be fine.”

After I settled into the seat on the back of Axel’s bike, I locked my arms around his middle. It struck me all over again how solid, warm, and strong he was, and how much I really enjoyed touching him. On the back of his leather vest, a large patch spanned from his shoulders to nearly his waist, with a howling wolf and stitched letters that read ALPHA RIDERS MC.

Managing to sit down was a little difficult in a pencil skirt. No matter what I did, the fabric rode up higher on my thighs than my mother would have liked.

She would be scandalized to see me like this,I thought. Lionel would probably say it was a slutty thing to do, riding a motorcycle in a short, tight skirt with a man I didn’t know.

But they weren’t here.

Besides, I didn’t mind showing a little skin when Axel reached back, curving his fingers into the crook of my knee as he brushed his thumb over my thigh.

“Do me a favor?” he asked over his shoulder.
