CHAPTER1

Rebel

Dropping my head in my hands, I growl under my breath. “I don’t have time for this, Dixie.”

My assistant grins at me. “I can’t tell the man that you’re not here. He already knows you are.”

“I got him the contract signed for the land. It’s not my fault that the sale is taking longer to go through then he wants.”

“You still need to give him a few minutes.”

“Fine,” I huff. “Send him back. But only for five minutes. Then I have a meeting with the sheriff. I don’t have any more time than that.”

“Fine. I’ll make sure and interrupt you to let you know that you’re going to be late after a few minutes.”

“Good. Thank you.”

She ducks out, chuckling. “Have fun!”

“You know I’m not gonna have any kind of fun. That man is an ass. And a really irritating one at that.”

“Okay. I know. But maybe be a little less nasty to him. He’s buying up a large chunk of land and rehabbing it all. That’s gonna be good for the area even if he just builds a house there. Not to mention he has a great ass and you’d have to be dead not to notice.”

“That land is not usable.” I ignore the rest of what she said. No way am I touching that shit.”

“Then why did you sell it to him?”

“Because he wouldn’t let it drop and I got tired of the man following me around town.”

She nods. “Fine. But still. Be nice.” She walks out of the room and seconds later, there he is. In the flesh. A lot of flesh. A lot of tanned, muscled and hunky flesh. Holy shit! I want to fan myself but I keep still behind my desk, waving him to a seat.

“Hello, Mr. DiRusso. What can I do for you today?” I hope he knows by the look on my face that I don’t really want to do anything for him today.

His wry grin says that he does know that but he won’t call me out on it. His steel-grey eyes dance with hidden laughter and I have to suck in a deep breath. The twinkle in his crystal eyes makes something turn over in my belly and I don’t like it.

It’s happened before. The first time he cornered me in my office, it set off something strange in my belly. Like butterflies. But I don’t do butterflies. Not with men. My high-school boyfriend cured me of all that kind of stuff. I don’t want anything to do with it. As far as I can tell, every man except my brother is a lying, cheating bastard.

I don’t need it. I don’t want it and I absolutely refuse to have anything to do with it. He can keep his damn twinkles and my belly flops. I’m good with my life.

“I was wondering if you’ve heard anything about the sale? About what’s the hold-up with the paperwork?”

I sigh and rub my head, cringing when I see his eyes following my movement. I can’t show this man any kind of weakness.

His lean, tanned face sharpens. “Headache?”

I quickly drop my hand and wipe my face clean, hiding the pain that’s tearing through my head. “I’m fine.”

“So, have you heard anything, Miss Carter?”

Shaking my head, I sigh. “Believe me, I don’t know anything more than you do. I’m not sure what’s taking so long. But I’m sure that everything will get taken care of soon. Just be a bit more patient.”

He huffs out a breath and I feel that tug in my gut again. I don’t know why I find this annoying man so….interesting.

He nods his dark head and I frown when I feel the insane urge to find out how soft his deep brown hair is. There’s a little bit of salt and pepper at his temples and sideburns and my fingers itch to touch it. That’s one of the damn reasons that I don’t like to be near this man. I mean, I know how guys are. Only out for one damn thing. And although my body says…I’m on board, my mind says no fucking way. I don’t and won’t trust any man.

“Miss Carter? It’s time for your appointment. He’s already here.”

“I’m sorry, Mr. DiRusso. I’ve got an appointment. This is a very busy time of year. I’ll let you know if I hear anything about the sale.”
