Xorgor continued talkingto my guys, but my vision became fuzzy. I clenched my fists by my sides and stared at the ground, trying to keep myself steady. But the longer time went on, the fuzzier my vision became, and the farther away their voices sounded.

Until, suddenly, everything was gone. When I reopened my eyes, I had almost been transported to another place.

Mom lay on a dingy mattress with thick metal chains wrapped four times around her wrists and her ankles, bounding her to the bedposts. She wore a white bra that seemed to be stained with years’ worth of sweat and blood, making it an off-white, almost-gray color.

Like so many times when Dad had paralyzed me, Mom wasn’t wearing any underwear. Unlike me, her stomach was heavily swollen, as if she was pregnant, and decorated with more stretch marks than I had ever seen on her belly.

Had she had more kids? No, she couldn’t have. She had died. This was a dream.

I walked into the bedroom and stared down at her as she stared up at the ceiling, her eyes dull, as if she didn’t have any fight in her left. Wanting her to feel something again, I brushed my warm fingers against her cold yet sweat-covered cheek.

She widened her eyes and shifted her focus to me, mouth parting in disbelief. “Sina,” she said, her voice sounding parched. “Sina, you found me. You really, truly found me. I … I never thought I’d see you again.”

“Mom,” I whispered, tears welling up in my eyes. “Mom, what’s going on?”

“Your father isn’t your father, sweetheart. He—”

“I know,” I said, nodding. “I know he’s the villain, the enemy. He’s done so much to me.”

“What has he done to you?” she asked weakly.

“Used me for experiments, let his friends … touch me—”

Suddenly, Mom’s eyes filled with tears, and her body trembled on the stained mattress. “I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you from him. This is all my fault. I should never have gone to him after they took your father. I should’ve raised you myself. I’m so sorry! I’ve done this to you!”

While her body flailed on the bed, she yanked on the chains around her wrists and ankles, only tightening them more and making herself bleed from the raw skin profusely. I sat on the edge of the bed and took her face into my hands.

“This isn’t your fault.”

“It is, Sina. Please, don’t tell me that he still has you,” she asked, tears glistening in her eyes. But then she shook her head. “No, he couldn’t. I wouldn’t be able to talk to you through here if you hadn’t mated.”

“What do you mean?” I whispered. “This is just a dream. You’re not real.”

“Sina,” she whispered, lips trembling. “Oh, my Sina. There is so much I didn’t get the chance to teach you about who you truly are, about the power you wield, about the family and species you come from.”

“Mom …” I whispered, still attempting to understand what she had just said.

She scrunched her face and grunted out in pain, her grunt turning into a scream. “The baby …” She looked down at her stomach and grabbed the thick chains in her hands. “You have to get out of here, hide somewhere. They’re coming for you, Sina. They’re coming soon.”

“What are you talking about? What’s—”

Mom let out another scream and spread her legs. “Sina, go! Only you can stop this. Find your real father.”

Suddenly, the door to my left opened. I didn’t want to leave Mom, but I couldn’t let them see me. Whoever it was, wherever this was … I needed to figure out what was going on even if this was just a dream.

I crouched behind a large dresser and hoped that the men wouldn’t see me, seeing as the room was basically bare otherwise. Three large men walked into the room along with the man who had told me to call him Dad.

For fifteen minutes, I crouched quietly in the corner of the room and desperately wanted to leap out and kill those men right here and right now. Mom’s screams echoed through the small room as she birthed twin girls.

Dad handed the babies to one of the guards. “You know what to do with them.” He nodded to another man who began to unbuckle his belt and stepped toward Mom. “Get her pregnant again. She has one more pregnancy until she’s disposable.”

With tears in her eyes, Mom shook her head. “Please, don’t. Let me see my babies.”

Instead of answering her, Dadwalked out of the room and left Mom alone with this burly human man. I stared at him in horror as he crawled up onto the bed and between the legs of a woman who had just given birth.

Mom tried kicking her chained legs at him, her shrill screams echoing through the room. I couldn’t fucking watch another second of this. I stood up and lunged at the man, grabbing him by the front of his throat before he could insert himself into her.
