“But, Calder …” She wiped some tears from her cheeks and glanced down at my body, gently moving her fingers against it, and then she sighed softly. “How do you feel?”

“Better.”

“Can you move?”

“My fingers. My toes. My head.”

“Nothing else?” she asked quietly, chewing on her lip again.

“No.”

She bit back a sob. “I’m sorry. I’ve tried to heal you. I’ve tried so hard. I gave you more than the regular dose of vampire blood and herbs. You might … you might not be able to walk again.”

My throat closed, my wolf howling lowly inside me at the thought of never being able to shift again.

“Even Thayer has tried,” she cried.

“It’s okay,” I whispered, gliding my fingers over any piece of skin of hers that I could feel. “I’d do it again for you.”

She dipped her head and rested it on my shoulder. “We’re going to lose this war. We can’t win without you.”

“That’s not true,” I whispered. “All this time, I’ve been trying to protect you. I needed to keep you safe. Now, it’s your turn. You’re the only person who can end this. Find those babies. Kill your father. Bring your species back. Then, come back to me and let me love you.”

She shook her head. “I’m not going anywhere without you, Calder.”

Calder lay in my bed, staring up at the ceiling. His neck had been severed so deeply that I hadn’t thought he’d make it through last night. I had cried so hard into Thayer’s, Darius’s, and Gaian’s arms at the mere thought of losing my mate.

But he was alive. And I had revenge to get on the man who had made him like this.

“Jaroth is awake, Sina,” Gaian said as I closed Calder’s door to let him rest. “Thayer has been torturing him in the prison all morning for answers about what he gave Calder, but he hasn’t spoken a single word.”

I swallowed hard, my stomach twisting, and hurried past Gaian toward the back door. I didn’t know why Jaroth had shown back up on our property before he said he would. I didn’t know why they had gotten into a fight. I didn’t know what the hell he was up to.

But I needed answers. Today.

As soon as I stepped foot outside, the smell of blood filled my nostrils. I followed the scent all the way to the prison and inhaled sharply when the guards opened the doors. Thayer must’ve let Jaroth bleed out all morning; the stench was repugnant.

“Sina!” Jaroth wailed when he saw me. Chained to a wall, he was naked with his dick cut clean off his body and hundreds of lashes across his abdomen. “Tell them to let me go. I haven’t done any—”

“What did you do to him?” I shouted at Jaroth. “What did you give Calder?!”

Jaroth’s eyes widened. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Sina. I didn’t do—”

My monster took control of me, pushing my guys out of the way and lunging toward Jaroth. I seized his neck in my grasp, my claws sinking into his pathetic neck, and lifted him, cutting off air to his lungs.

“What the hell did you do to him?” I roared, my voice shrill. “Tell me!”

“I-I didn’t do anything! Let me out!”

“You want out?” I asked, breathing hitched. “You want out of these fucking chains?”

“Yes, Sina. I’ll give you anything you want. Please.”
