“Sure,” I said, grabbing his arm at the shoulder and tearing it clean off his body.

He threw his head back and screamed, his pleas lost in the hatred I had for him. So he really couldn’t move or escape, I grabbed his opposite leg and ripped it off his body too.

“You’re free.”

He collapsed to the ground, blood gushing out of his wounds. “What have you done?!”

“Have fun running your fucking demon kingdom,” I said between clenched teeth, crouching to his level. “That’s why you pulled me away from my father. That’s why you helped me leave, isn’t it? You wanted my power to help you secure your place as king of the demons?”

Instead of answering me, he grabbed his arm wound with his opposite hand. “Please.”

“What did you fucking give Calder?” I asked. “Or I’ll rip off your other arm.”

“The juice that paralyzes someone,” he said.

“And what else?”

“Nothing!” he shouted. “I swear.”

“What else?!”

“Nothing else was in the syringe. It was a stronger dose than your father usually gave you. When Calder attacked me, I sank it into his spinal cord at the nape of his neck, but I did it for us—”

I slashed him across the face with my claws, opening up another wound. The sweet smell of blood drifted through my nose, stronger than before, and my fangs ached for it. “There is no us! There will never be an us. You paralyzed my mate. And for that, I will kill you.”

“Please,” he cried, wincing away. “I can reverse it.”

My chest tightened, and I forced my monster to stay still. “How?” I growled. When he didn’t respond, I held out my hand toward Thayer, Darius, and Gaian. “Give me the syringe that Jaroth gave me last night. I’m going to do the same thing he did to Calder.”

When Darius handed me the syringe, Jaroth furiously shook his head. “Look, I don’t know how to do it, but I know what might work. You know that your father has been putting the blood of Paragon babies into human men. You might be able to do the same with Calder.”

“I’m not sacrificing an innocent Paragon baby,” I said quietly, though the thought lingered in the back of my head.

If it can save my mate …

My stomach twisted even harder.

What the fuck am I thinking? I can’t do that!

“Not a baby,” Jaroth said. “Your blood.”

“How?” I asked between gritted teeth. If I could save him, then I would. “How do I do it?”

“It’s not as simple as just giving him some of your blood,” Jaroth said. “There is an entire process. I don’t know what it is. I’ve only seen a glimpse of what your father has done. Only in passing. I swear.”

I stepped toward him with the syringe. “If you don’t know how it’s done, then you’re no use to me.”

“Wait! Please!” he shouted. “I know someone who might help.”

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not! I know who your real father is!”

I stopped inches from him and tilted my head. “What do you mean?”

“Your real father,” he said in a hurry. “Demons captured him years ago and bound him in the ice pits up north. He has the strongest power of Paragonian magic that the world has ever known. He could help you transform Calder into a Paragon too.”

Gripping the syringe tighter in my hand, I stared at this man in front of me who had kept these secrets from me for all these years. Why hadn’t he told me? Why hadn’t he helped me? If he’d ever truly cared about anyone other than himself, he would’ve said something.
