Suddenly, a monstrous screech pierced through the forest. I placed my hands over my ears to stop the ringing and winced at the sound. When I peered from behind the rock at the scene unfolding in front of me, bile rose in my stomach.

A guard uncuffed a Paragon, who must’ve only been seven years old. She stood with her head dropped, long, unkempt brown hair covering her face, her body so thin that I could see her rib cage.

“This is your reward, Warrior Number Thirty-Four,”Fathermuttered to the girl. “Remember this when the other Paragons act out of line. Remember what you receive when you’re a good girl for me.”

Rage rushed through me, those exact words whistling through my head. The first time I’d heard them, I couldn’t have been older than this girl. It was the first time that … the first time that he had let someone slip inside me.

My monster took over.

When I went to leap out from behind the rock, Darius grabbed my elbows and held me back with all his might, his grip tighter than it ever had been.“Don’t do it, Sina. Do not let him get underneath your skin. You need to survive.”

“He needs to die,”I growled through the mind link.

Darius grabbed me harder.“Stop it, Sina!”

Before I could charge out there and stop the girl from doing whatever she was about to do, she gently rubbed her wrists where the chains had once been and licked her lips, her fangs extending from her mouth.

She lunged forward at the paralyzed man and began feasting on his flesh and tearing off his limbs, killing him within a single moment. I stared in horror at the sheer amount of damage that this girl could do and shuffled back against Darius.

And this girl was Warrior #34. Who knew how manyDadhad already?

Warrior#34 flung pieces of flesh behind her while hungrily feasting on the human’s innards. His screams had died out only a couple of moments ago, but I could still hear them ringing in my ears. This young girl was a cannibal, a beast who had been starved.

We needed to get out of here now.

Right fucking now.

“Let’s go, Sina,”I said, tugging on her elbows to pull her away.

She shuffled back another few feet, but then a baby’s cry echoed through the forest. After tensing, she ground her feet into the forest floor and refused to allow me to pull her back another inch.“We have to save the baby.”

“We have to go.”

Before I could tug her back, she yanked me forward.“We need to save it.”

“No,”I growled.

How couldn’t she see that we wouldn’t be able to survive this? Who knew how many Paragons this man had at his disposal in these woods, searching and hunting us down? He wouldn’t have come alone, not when he knew how powerful Sina truly was.

Sina struggled in my hold, desperately wanting me to set her free so she could kill the man who called himself her father. And after what I had just seen that little girl do to a grown man, I wanted to let her go too.

But if I released her, we would all die.

I felt that in my fucking soul. The Moon Goddess was whispering to me to hold her tight, to keep her safe because this man was anything but nice, anything but sweet. He was worse than cruel.

“Let me go, Darius!”she screamed through the mind link.“I need to save them!”

“You saw what that girl is capable of,”I growled back at her.“She just tore a grown fucking man into pieces and feasted on his body. I’m not going to let her do that to you too. You’re mine. I-I can’t lose you again.”

Calder, Thayer, and Gaian had trusted me to protect Sina. I refused to let her go. I had waited so long for her to come back, for her to tell me that she wanted me like she wanted the others, for her to let me mark her.

My canines lengthened, my wolf taking control.
