A few moments later, Calder walked into the house after Darius and Thayer, his gaze immediately reaching mine. We stared at each other for a few moments until I got pissed the fuck off because he had left me earlier. I had been begging for him, pleading that he take me, that he explain to me why I was going through heat.

And he had left.

He’d freaking left.

“What?” I snapped.

Instead of answering me, this ho of a man walked up the stairs to his bedroom. Not wanting to deal with it anymore, I followed him and grabbed his wrist to stop him halfway up the stairs. He froze as our skin touched, then yanked himself away from me.

“What is wrong with you?”

“Don’t fucking touch me, Sina. I’m not in the mood.”

“You sure were in the mood ten minutes ago.”

He hardened his glare at me, and then, suddenly, it softened. He stared at me with so much hurt, so much love—I didn’t know exactly what it was. All I could seem to do was stare back at him and wonder what his damn problem was.

One moment, he hated me. The next, he was looking at me like this …

“I’m fine,” I said, answering the question he was giving me with his eyes. “Don’t worry about me. You’re the one who left while I was supposedly inheat.” And then I strolled back down the stairs, ignoring the stares from the other guys, and walked to the kitchen to make myself some breakfast or lunch or whatever the hell meal it was.

I couldn’t figure him out. I didn’t know if I would ever be able to figure him out either.

The only logical reason for his bipolar personality was that I was their mate.

I wasn’t blind and definitely not stupid. When it came to me, they were all possessive and reckless assholes who had gotten way too close the moment I entered Durnbone again. After days of coming up with any reasons as to why they had wanted me back so badly, this was the only one.

If I wasn’t their mate, I didn’t know why they reacted the way they did. If I wasn’t their mate, they would’ve forgotten about me these past four years and shouldn’t care about what had happened to me. To them, I had just left.

“You went through heat?” Darius asked from the living room.

Calder stared at me for a couple more moments, then walked up the rest of the stairs to his bedroom. When he slammed the door, I poured myself some much-needed coffee and swallowed hard.

“I don’t know for certain. Maybe I was just having a hot flash.”

But deep down, I knew that it really had been heat.

I, a human female, had gone through heat.

I, my father’s experiment, had proven to be a success.

After taking a huge gulp of my coffee, I sat at the kitchen island and rethought all my life choices and everything that had happened lately. These guys had searched for me for the past four years, then taken me in because I was their mate. But what I couldn’t wrap my head around was that they hadn’t marked me yet. Calder had come close last night, and Gaian had mentioned that they were hiding something from me. Still, what was stopping them?

Thayer walked over to me and forcefully grabbed my arm, examining the scratches and cuts that I had given myself only a few short minutes ago. I’d wanted to get out of my skin so badly that I cut my flesh open with my fingernails.

“Who did this to you?” he asked.

“I did.”

“Don’t play around with me, Sina,” he growled. “Your human nails couldn’t do this shit.”

Not wanting him to question me anymore, I pulled myself away from that man and continued to drink my coffee. “It’s none of your business. I was feeling hot, so I did it to myself. If you don’t want to believe me, don’t.”

Thayer glared at me even harder than Calder had, and then he grabbed my arm and pressed his palm against the cuts. I went to pull myself away, but he didn’t budge. Instead, he held my arm even tighter and closed his eyes.

My arm burned for a moment, and I whimpered. “Thayer, let go.”

When he reopened his eyes, his irises were as red as a demon’s. He let my arm go. I glanced down at my forearm and saw that he had healed the cuts, every last one of them. His eyes returned back to normal, and he walked back upstairs.
