His eyes were as dark as the night and tinted with redness that only someone part demon could have.
“I had symptoms of heat too.”
I watched as Thayer stormed down the stairs and out the front door without so much as a good-bye. He headed straight for their pack’s prison, and I could only think about how he had come home from the prison the other night with blood covering his body right before he fucked me in the bath.
Maybe they had found another one of Dad’s men wandering around the property.
“Girl, why didn’t you lead with that?” she asked. “We’ve been making potions for the last half hour, and you didn’t say a peep about it to me! What kind of friend are you? I need to knowallthe juicy deets.”
My cheeks flushed, and I shook my head. “Nothing’s really happened. They refuse to mark me for some fucked up reason. I don’t know. I’m trying to think positively, you know? Otherwise, I’ll flip.”
“I get that,” Maxine said.
After we fell into a comfortable silence, Maxine pulled off some more potion corks and let me fill them. “Anyway, I’m hosting a Halloween party next weekend at my place. Xorgor is coming and a few demons. Wanna come? It should be fun!”
“Gods, yes!” I said, my lips curling into a wide grin. “That’s the best thing I’ve heard in, like, days now. I need some desperate girl time and to finally relax. These guys are driving me so damn crazy.”
“In a good way,” Maxine added.
Sometimes, she knew me better than I knew myself.
“You could say that,” I said, cutting my gaze to Calder, who walked out of his room with Gaian and Darius behind him. He walked with such poise, such confidence that it aggravated me. “Or in an annoying-ass way.”
“Halloween party?” Gaian asked, hoping off the last step and heading toward the kitchen. He grabbed a potion bottle and pulled off the cork, his biceps flexing. “Making plans without us, Pretty Bird?”
“Oh, I’m sorry.” I rolled my eyes playfully. “Can I go to a Halloween party, my dear men who will not leave me alone for a single moment? I know Ialwaysneed your approval for anything and everything. I’m so terribly sorry.”
Every single word was dripping with sarcasm.
Calder growled at me and stormed out the front door, heading in the direction where Thayer had disappeared a few moments ago. Darius followed.
Gaian grabbed my ponytail and pulled it back, so I stared directly up at him. He planted a kiss right on my lips, then dipped his head to whisper into my ear. “You don’t have to ask us to go. You just have to make sure we’re invited.”
“You’re invited,” Maxine said, throwing me a wink. “Sina even told me that she wanted you guys to dress her in thesluttiestcostume that you could find.”
“Maxine!” I shouted, cheeks flushing. “I do not!”
“One that shows off her tits,” Maxine continued.
“Oh, I have the perfect costume for you,” Gaian murmured to me, his lips curling into a smile against my neck. “You’re going to fucking love it, Pretty Bird, and we’ll get to check another one of the diary entries off your list,” he said, lowering his voice toward the end.
“What do you mean? I don’t have any Halloween party fantasies.”
Gaian pulled away from me and chuckled deeply, his pale cheeks rounding. “You’ll see.”
I wasn’t surewhathe was going to have me wear, but I couldn’t wait to find out.

Later that night,Calder, Thayer, and I went out to the Dead Candle Tavern in Durnbone to regroup and chat about Sina and what we were planning on doing. We needed to act quickly because I knew that her father would attack us soon, but none of us could even think clearly around her.
“What pisses me off the most is that she won’t tell us shit,” Calder said, tightening the glass in his hand and growling. Calder’s eyes turned a shade of gold—the color of his wolf and whenever he thought of Sina.
“Becauseyoupiss her off,” Thayer said through gritted teeth. “You’vebeen the one lying to her and keeping shit from her. You almost ruined it again. She’s not going to tell us anything if she doesn’t feel fucking comfortable with us.”
