the breakfast

The next morning,I padded downstairs to grab some breakfast and to finish packaging the last of the potions. I wanted to find a couple places around the forest and around Durnbone today to hide them, in case something went terribly wrong within the next couple of weeks.

“Morning,” Gaian said, cracking eggs over a pan on the stove. “Sleep well?”

I glanced around the kitchen at Thayer, who looked pissed like usual, and Darius, who gave me a small smile. Calder wasn’t here this morning, which surprised me. Usually, he liked fucking with me from the moment I woke up to the moment I fell asleep.

“Okay,” I said, wanting to keep the conversation short.

If I gave him a real answer, it’d be that I’d barely slept all last night. Pains kept shooting through my entire body, as if someone were stabbing me with their claws. Not only that, but the sleep I had gotten was filled with nightmares about Dad.

“You don’t look too sure about that, Pretty Bird,” Darius said.

Thayer growled. “Leave her the fuck alone.”

After grabbing the potion mix and potion bottles from the closet, I opened the last few containers and began pouring in the liquid in silence. For it being almost ten a.m., Calder not bothering me was sorta, kinda weird.

“Has anyone seen Calder?” I asked, shutting the cap on a bottle.

Just as if the asshole knew I was talking about him, he opened the back door and walked into the house, completely naked. Scars and blood decorated his tan, muscular body, and dark bags lay under his eyes.

My eyes widened. While something inside me urged me to hurry over to him to help him clean his wounds, I stayed glued to the spot. It wasn’t like he’d do something like that for me even though I was his mate.

But still, I couldn’t do nothing, so I said, “What happened to you?”

He didn’t look over at me. “Nothing.”

“Calder.”

Instead of snapping at me like I expected him to, he stopped in his tracks with his back flexed and turned toward me. “What, Sina?” he asked, voice surprisingly quieter and softer than usual but hoarse.

“I …” I started. But I didn’t know what the fuck I wanted to say to him.

Screw that. I knew exactly what I wanted to say to him. I wanted to ask him who the fuck had given him those scars and wounds, whose blood was on his body, and where I could find them. My chest was tight with anger, a wolfish, blinding rage rushing through me.

“Who gave those to you?” I asked through clenched teeth, my voice low.

All the guys—even Calder—snapped their heads in my direction, as if they were surprised about what I had just said, or maybe it was the way that I’d said it. I didn’t know, but either way, I wanted answers.

“Why do you want to know?”

“Gods, are you an idiot?!” I asked, eyes wide and teeth aching … teeth aching to rip into someone, to kill them for the wounds they had left on my mate’s body. Heat quickly engulfed my body, making it flushed and pounding and red.

Why couldn’t he understand that even though he was a fucking jerk sometimes, I still cared about him? If I hadn’t, then I would’ve left here a long time ago. I’d escaped Dad’s estate without him finding me, so I could’ve easily escaped his pack house.

Even though I’d tried before, I didn’t really want to leave. I never wanted to leave them.

After running my hands through my hair, I let out a low growl and turned back to the potions. I didn’t want to say it out loud because I feared that I’d look like a dumbass. Gaian, Darius, and Thayer knew that Calder treated me like shit sometimes. And my stupid ass still liked him for some damn reason.

None of the guys moved as I continued packing the potions. I pursed my lips and stared down at the liquid, making sure to use every last drop of it. Maybe I would have Gaian take me back down to the witch’s little shop in Durnbone, so I could get more ingredients.

“I’m going to hide these around the property today and some in town,” I said.

“I’ll come with you,” Calder said, grabbing some spare clothes from a closet, then walking into the bathroom. “Give me a second.”

I arched a brow and began placing the potions inside my backpack. While I didn’t want him to come with me, I really didn’t have a choice in the matter. He would come with me whether I wanted him to or not.
