“He was experimenting when I escaped, on other species and on humans, lacing my DNA with theirs, seeing what would happen. I think he was trying to create … another species or … trying to convert humans into … a superspecies.”

“A superspecies,” I whispered.

Everybody knew that magic and science didn’t mix well together. If he was really trying to create a superior species or even a superior mate for other species, then things were bound to get messy. Really fucking messy.

“Why?” I asked, trying to figure it out myself.

“I don’t know,” she whispered, her shoulders slumping forward.

After she took a couple of steadier breaths, I knew that Sina was about to finally rest well. She needed it after what had happened last night.

Hell, we all needed it.

So, instead of pushing further, I brushed some hair from her face and gently hummed. “Sleep well, Pretty Bird. We can talk about this later if you’re up for it. Sound good?” I asked, listening to her mumble in response.

She maneuvered her smaller body until she was lying on top of me and murmured, “You make me feel so safe, Gaian.”

My chest tightened, warmth shooting through my body. My wolf purred in response, but I could do nothing but let a stupid lopsided grin stretch across my face. After her father had abducted her, I’d never thought I would hear those words.

But my Sina was back, lying in my arms, and I felt like I was on top of the world.

After trekkingall the way back to Sina’s friend’s home, I walked up the stone pathway. Red plastic cups littered the front lawn. The music from last night had died down completely. And this place smelled of liquor and piss.

I knocked twice on the front door. “Open up.”

Dressed in fuzzy emerald pajamas, Maxine opened the door. “What’re you doing here? It’s, like, six in the morning. Sina hasn’t been here since last night. I thought she went home with—”

“Where’s your boyfriend?”

“My boyfriend?” Maxine asked, cheeks reddening. “You mean, Xorgor?”

“You’re dating, right?” I stepped into the house. “Right. Where the fuck is he?”

Sighing softly, Maxine closed the door behind me and led me to the back room, where Xorgor was lying on a bed with his junk hanging out everywhere. Jesus fucking Christ, demons didn’t have any fucking shame.

Once I cleared my throat, I grasped the door handle and looked down at Maxine, who stood in the doorway. “I need to talk to him privately. It’s about Sina.” And with that, I slammed the door closed.

Xorgor stirred on the bed and eventually sat up, rubbing the human side of his face.

I tossed him his clothes. “Get the fuck up and get dressed. We need to talk.”

“About what?” he asked, voice groggy and deep. He pulled on his shorts to cover his junk and stood up, stretching to his full height. While he wasn’t that much taller than me, half his body was always in demon form, which—I would assume—was why he didn’t hang out with many other people.

To my knowledge, he had always tried to stay hidden with his magic and rarely made appearances in Durnbone. I didn’t blame him either. The people here—especially the demons—weren’t accepting of anyone who looked different. Which meant one thing … he would align with me.

“What is it?” he asked.

“The demons don’t accept me,” I started, balling my hands into fists and thinking back to the other day when I had visited mymother. “I can’t get close to them, and my family … they won’t tell me shit. By the looks of it, the demons don’t like you much either. You have royal blood, but I doubt you even have a chance at being leader of our species.”

Xorgor clenched his jaw, his one red demon eye glowing. “I don’t want to talk about that.”

“Yeah, well, neither do I,” I said, pausing for a moment to make sure that I didn’t hear anyone’s heartbeat nearby. I stepped closer to Xorgor. “But we have a problem. A bigger problem than you could even fathom. And I need information on Jaroth.”
