“The perfect beings?”I repeated, brows furrowing. “The Paragon.”

“It sounds fucking crazy,” Thayer said, pacing around the prison and running his hands through his hair. He stared at the ground, his wolfish eyes turning a piercing red demon color. “Because it is. How can a species be perfect? Not even gods can reach perfection.”

“I’ve read about the Paragon briefly,” Gaian said. “Isn’t it a book in the library? From what I remember, the Paragonian people are a combination of species, almost like you. Multiple species in one.”

“The Paragonian people aren’t mutts like me,” Thayer said. “All the books and lessons we learn during school have been watered down, so as not to cause hysteria, but demon families pass down what they know to be true.”

“Then, what are they?” I asked, confused.

Still, I couldn’t grasp this reality. Sina had always been human. She had been human four years ago, and she had been human when she escaped her father and returned to Durnbone. If she were anything else, we would’ve sensed or noticed it on her.

“The Paragons are not just a combination of species with a mother from one species and a father from another. They have a mother and a father who are Paragons, too, and they come from aonce-thought-to-be-extinct species, the first species where all other species derive from.”

I ran my tongue across my teeth and took in the information that Thayer had presented me. Thayer was batshit crazy most of the time. From the outside, this might’ve seemed like one of those times, but it couldn’t be. I hadn’t seen anything like Sina before.

“Wasn’t the last known sighting of one five hundred years ago?” Gaian asked.

“So fucking what?” Thayer asked. “Everyone thought they’d die out, become extinct, but they’ve been in hiding because everyone either wants to kill them or use them for their power, which is exactly what Sina’s ex-boyfriend is trying to do.”

“You found information on him?” I asked, stepping forward and balling my hands.

“Xorgor told me that fucker had lied to Sina about her father’s whereabouts,” Thayer said, clutching the silver prison cell bars in his fists until I could hear the sizzling of his skin. “He mentioned he is aiming for the throne once the demon queen steps down. He is weak as fuck, but if he had Sina by his side …”

“He could take over the fucking world,” I finished.

All this time, we had known that Sina’s ex-boyfriend was lying. We just didn’t know about what or why. Now, if what Thayer had said was true, we could protect Sina just a bit more. Or at least, she could protect herself.

I would do anything for her, but she was so powerful that even I couldn’t have stopped her last night alone. I wanted to protect her as much as I could, but Sina was still holding something back from us, something that maybe she didn’t even know yet.

Only she knew or could sense her father’s never-ending danger.

“That means, her father is one too?”

Thayer became quiet. “I don’t fucking know. Yes? But then he shouldn’t need these fucking idiots to do his dirty work. He shouldn’t need poisonous bullets to kill us. He could kill anyone he wants, just like Sina killed that vampire.”

After running a hand across my face, I blew out a breath. “So, do we tell her?”

“I think we need more information,” Gaian said, crossing his arms and staring at the ground, the way he did when he was thinking. “What if Sina’s not one of these Paragons and she is just growing into her wolf?”

“She hadn’t even been bitten yet,” Thayer said. “She wouldn’t have had a wolf.”

“What if her father did something to her? What if he wanted to make her a wolf or another species? He was doing experiments on her and was … you know, letting other species basically breed with her.”

A blood-hungry growl rumbled from my throat. “Don’t you fucking say those words ever again, Gaian, or I swear, I’ll throw you into one of these prison cages myself and torture the fuck out of you.”

Gaian put his hands up and stepped back. “It’s the truth.”

Thayer continued to pace the hallway of the prison, then finally stopped in front of Gaian and me. “I’m fucking telling you right now that there is no fucking way her father created that. None of the shit he did makes any sense, but there’s no amount of science that could create a superhuman species like Sina.”

Gaian shook his head. “So, you’re just going to tell Sina with no context at all?”

“Gaian’s right,” I said to Thayer. “We don’t know the whole story. Who knows what her father did or how powerful he truly is? He vanished with her without a trace four years ago and managed to stay hidden for years while experimenting. And who the hell knows what happened to her mother?”
