She just shakes her head and laughs.

“Fuck,” Ryder says, his hands slinging in the air before gripping his head. “That fucker will probably turn us in either way.”

“No. I think we’ll be good if I win for him.” She stands there, her arms folded over her chest with an annoyed look on her face as I continue. “I’m sorry. I really don’t want to. But I don’t have a choice.”

Her annoyance morphs into amusement as she steps closer to me. “Nothing to be sorry for. I never expected you to keep your word anyway. It’s not exactly something you’re known for doing. Remember?”

“Morgan, I—” She steps back as I reach for her.

“Seriously, Cade. Shut the fuck up. Run back to my dad and ask him which nut you need to lick today to keep him happy.”

“I hate him as much as you do, but what the fuck can I do?”

“Well, I can stab you in the shoulder if you want.” She laughs, but it reminds me of Fabian, and I question again how much of an accident it was when the last QB got injured.

“I’m sure that’d make your day so much better, but I’d like to keep my arm intact.”“Pussy,” she mutters with amusement.

“Really, Morgan. I don’t want to play but I don’t have a choice. What do you expect me to do?”

Her amusement lessens a bit. “Nothing. Exactly what you’re good at doing. Run back toCoachand tell him you’ll be his fuckboy. I’m done with you anyways. You catch feelings too fucking easy.”

Morgan has no idea how much all of this is killing me. I wanted her to be able to count on me. I wanted to show her she could trust me to keep my promise to her. But I can’t. Thankfully Ryder speaks up, because I can’t do that either.

“We need to be careful. Even if he says he won’t turn us in, we need to play it safe.”

Morgan has a lot to say as she points to me, “Well then, this dipshit might want to hold off on calling more we-killed-Lenny meetings.”

“Fucking A, Morgan.” Ryder glances around before he looks back to her. “Can you please keep your mouth shut and not beat the shit out of Ava again?”

“No promises.” She stares to me. “I don’t make them when I know I’ll break them.”

I take a few steps to her as she surprisingly remains in place. I know I shouldn’t, but I don’t know what else to say. “Seems like that bothers you a lot for someone who expectsnothingfrom me.”

A smile peeks at her busted lip, but I see she’s fighting against something else. Anger maybe? “Keep telling yourself that if it helps make you feel better.”

“This isn’t helping. At all.” Ryder steps beside us as he adds, “But she’s right. We shouldn’t be here like this.”

“I’ll turn myself in,” Neil volunteers.

Savannah and I both tell him no at the same time. “Never gonna happen. I’ll go down for it before I allow you to take the fall,” I tell him, but it only makes his expression grow more guilty.

“Aw. Always the protector,” Morgan singsongs. “But Captain Savior is correct. That’s not going to happen. Everyone just needs to get their dicks out of a twist and act normal.”

“Like fighting in the hallway?” I ask her.

“Is that really out of character for me?” She waves over her face. “I mean, if we’re going with the”—she raises her hands to make air quotes as she emphasizes the word—“story, would it really be that shocking that I went after her again?”

“No.” Ryder rolls his eyes. “You being batshit crazy is totally normal, Morgan, but can you take it down at least a level or two?”

“Maybe a smidgen, just for you.” She turns to walk away but not before speaking directly to Neil. “Don’t let all this get to you. The only mistake you made was not letting me off him.”

Ryder curses under his breath; he’s obviously figured out there’s no point in telling her shit. Neil stands there for a minute before slowly taking a few steps back, then leaves with Savannah behind him.

“You know Morgan’s going to make this ten times harder than need be,” Ryder says, his eyes on the ground.

I hesitate for a few seconds, but I have to tell him. Shit, Ineedto tell someone, and who better than her brother. He is more than aware that her unhinged ass doesn’t need further ammunition to spiral out of control. But I still have to ask him, “If I tell you something, will you swear not to tell your sister?”

Alarm shows on his face. “Yeah. What is it now?”
