“You’re lying. Your man is about to receive an award for and perform a song you wrote.”
“It’s not a big deal.”
“It’s averybig deal so stop fronting and don’t pass out when he thanks you.”
“He won’t.” My eyes shot up to his and he chuckled, shaking his head.
“He will but I didn’t call to make things worse. Just wanted to say I love you and I’m so proud of you.”
“Well of course you love me. I’m your person, Val.”
“Mommy I want to talk to Auntie Val, too.”
“Put me on speaker.”
I did and let Val take over.
“I can hear you, Gracie. Do you miss me?”
“I do. A lot. Do you miss me?”
“Every day, caterpillar.”
I watched Gracie’s pretty face crinkle and her little brows dive in like she was deep in thought. After a few seconds of contemplation, she handed those thoughts over. “You can sleep in my bed at Mommy’s house if you miss me too much. It will make you feel better.”
Val laughed and I could tell from how muffled it sounded Gracie’s solution to the problem had caught her off guard. It only got worse when Gracie added, “Or you can come here with us. My daddy’s house is really, really big. There are lots of rooms and I’ll ask him if you can have one.”
Those big brown eyes of hers lifted to Jaasir. “Daddy, can she have one of the rooms at your house? She can have my Mommy’s since she sleeps in yours now.”
Next to him I stiffened. We had been careful or so we’d thought. Gracie was smart enough to figure things out. Since she didn’t have an issue with me and Jaah sharing a room, which she’d just made clear, he would damn suretake full advantage. No more creeping out early in the morning to avoid a conversation with Gracie.
“How about I just come visit you for a while? I can sleep with you and we can snuggle like we used to. Then I won’t miss you so much.” Val for the save.
“Okay. Will you bring me a surprise?”
“I sure will. A very special one. Now let me speak to your mother. I love you, okay?”
“I love you too.”
I lifted my phone and quickly removed it from speaker. I had a feeling there was going to be a discussion about me sleeping in Jaasir’s room but I would worry about that later.
“Glad to know you’re taking advantage of your in-house dick, babe.”
“Are you judging me for something you clearly demanded I do? Let’s not forget he’s my husband now.”
“Nope, not at all. I can’t judge when I’m doing the same thing.”
“Same thing? You’re living with someone? Wait, no. Are you married?” I squealed.
“No.”
“Then what do you mean by same thing, Valerie Marie Brown?”
“I might have a consistent overnight guest that spends several nights a week here with me and before you say anything,su casa es mi casaand you bailed on me so I have the right to fill that void…”
“I don’t have a…” I glanced at Gracie who was fully focused on her father’s phone again, watching some video. Once I was sure Gracie was occupied I turned away from Jaasir and whispered, “I don’t have a dick so that’s not exactly filling the void that I left you with, Val.”
