“You do, I’m not doubting that for one minute. I have to at least say what’s on my mind. If you want to have a little fun, do it. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying life, just promise me you’ll be careful. He’s…”

“You don’t know him, Val.”

“And neither do you, but we both know his type.”

The conversation was paused when Gracie came running in the room throwing herself at Val. “I’m ready for my surprise. Can I have it now?” She threw her head back beaming up at Val who returned her enthusiasm.

“Not yet, Gracie.” Val lifted my baby into her arms and tugged at one of her curls. “You have to let me make your hair look just as pretty as you do and I have to get dressed. Then you can have your surprise but we have to go somewhere to get it. It’s a big one too.”

“You can tell me. I can keep a secret.” Gracie’s little hands pressed against Val’s cheeks.

So damn adorable.

“It’s your surprise, baby. I can’t tell you or it won’t be a surprise. Now go get your brush and comb and take it to my room so that we can finish getting ready.”

“Okay but hurry. We can’t be late for my surprise.” Gracie wiggled out of Val’s arms and came to me, holding her head back, putting puckered lips on display.

“Kisses, Mommy. I has to finish getting pretty.”

“Youhaveto not has to,” I corrected before landing a kiss to her waiting lips. “Be good for Auntie Val, okay. If you are, we’ll do pancakes for dinner.”

“Yay. This is gonna be the best day ever.” She beamed running out the room.

“Thank you for this.”

“You don’t have to thank me. You know I never mind spending time with Gracie, just promise you’ll be careful with him.”

“I will.”

“Good because if he hurts you, I hurt him. I don’t play about mine.”

“God, I know.” I rolled my eyes knowing that Val would fight a giant for me and had tried a few times.

“Long as you know.” She blew me a kiss heading to the door, pausing just under the frame. “Oh and if he’s offering the dick you better gratefully accept and make me proud.”

“I absolutely will not.”

“I would say I believe you, but I don’t. That man already has you acting out of character. Got me questioning whether or not I can still call you a good mother.”

“Val, that’s a low blow.”

“Yep and you deserved it for making me have to come up with a surprise for Gracie because her mother wants to be a hoe. Which, by the way, I fully support.”

She winked and left my bathroom and had me staring in the mirror trying to decide what the hell I was doing. I had no answers for what, but I did know why I was doing it.

He was about six three, beautiful brown skin, eyes that looked as lost as mine and a smile that set my world on fire.Hewas my why.

“You’re late.”

“Barely,” he mumbled looking like those ten minutes were the deciding factor on whether or not he’d make it at all.

“It’s ten after nine. I said nine.”

“Yeah, but can I at least get an honorable mention? Considering you called me at eight barking out commands while I was half asleep barely making sense of what the hell was going on. The fact that I’m even functional this damn early is an accomplishment.”

“Not a morning person?” I teased. “But I thought you were from the city that never sleeps. Oh wait, that makes sense, clubs open until four a.m. which means you’re probably used to sleeping until they open again at night.”
