He grunted his displeasure, taking a seat on the end of the fountain. “Nah, I’m not a club person unless I’m being…”

He paused, almost like he was catching himself from saying something before he finished with, “Being forced to go.”

I had a feeling that wasn’t what he was originally going to say which had me staring at him a little harder.

“You don’t seem like the type of man who can beforcedto do anything.”

“You’d be surprised,” he mumbled but I chose not to press the issue and instead asked, “So then you’re just naturally not a morning person? Kinda sucks because morning is the best time of day.”

“That’s not it. I just don’t sleep well. Haven’t in years. Most of the time I’m falling out by the time the sun comes up.”

“I’ve had days like that but I still can’t sleep all day. I’ve tried, doesn’t work for me.”

“Somehow I believe that.”

“Are you going to be a grump this whole time? Because if you are then maybe we should try this another time.”

“I’ll be fine but is anything open this damn early? I thought the point was for me to experience the city.”

“And you will, we have to get going. The sun’s perfect right now.”

“Is that thing reliable?”

“Are you really going to be that person?” I folded my arms across my chest and he stared at me in confusion.

“What person?”

“The ‘I’m too good to ride in your piece of shit car’ person.”

A smirk that I wanted not to like eased in place as he shoved his hands into the pockets of his track pants. “It’s not about being too good and more about survival. You just called it a piece of shit car.”

I frowned, glancing at my baby before stepping closer to him and pressing my finger in his chest. Bad move. Damn he was solid. “It’s my piece of shit car so I can refer to it as such, however, you can’t. Now get in, you’ll survive just fine.”

I heard his Jeep beep before he walked over to the passenger side of my car and waited for me to get in because his door was locked. I leaned across to pop the lock and he frowned, looking down at me.

“I don’t think I’m gonna fit.”

“Would you stop complaining? Just let the seat back.” I was instantly grateful that I’d removed Gracie’s car seat since she was spending the day with Val. I wasn’t ashamed of my baby girl, but she was the most important thing to me and I wasn’t positive that I was ready to let him into that part of my life. Or if ever. Truthfully I had no clue what I was doing with him.

After he was safely inside, we were on our way and he did fit, sort of. It wouldn’t hurt to have a little extra leg room but he didn’t complain.

“So where are we going?”

“I’m going to capture the hidden gems that make Coleman the best place you could ever live and you’re tagging along. So by default you get to experience all that Coleman has to offer.”

“You’re a photographer? That fits. Multi-talented I see.”

You have no idea.

“And me working at The Bottom doesn’t?” I cut my eyes his way to find his waiting. He was staring at me in a way that felt too comfortable.

“It fits but so does the visual of you with a camera in your hands. You any good?”

“People pay me so it appears that I am.”

He chuckled, looking out the window briefly before his eyes were back on me. “Not really. I know a shitload of people who get paid to do things that they fucking suck at. Money exchange is not a promise of good service.”

“True, but I’m a great photographer.”
