“I guess I’m about to find out for myself, aren’t I?”

“Yep, we have a long day ahead of us.”

“Great.” He groaned, slouching down into the seat a little more.

I followed the sharp lines of his body from broad shoulders down toned muscular arms that flexed with the slightest movement.

When I lifted my eyes from his lap where his hands rested, I was met with a brown pair that sat above a smug grin.

“You like what you see?”

“I wasn’t…”

“Yeah you were, but it’s cool. Just don’t let your man know you’re crushing on me. Not trying to have those type of problems right now. I got enough shit to deal with.” He mumbled the last part which had me curious.

“I don’t have a man for you to have problems with.”

He frowned at me, likely confused because I told him that I belonged to someone.

Gracie.

Instead of giving him time to question me, I changed the subject. “What do you do?”

His head turned to the window before he answered. “I’d rather not say.”

“That’s not necessarily fair is it?”

“No, it’s not but I’m here to get away from my life for a little while. Talking about it doesn’t help me do that.”

“Btu what if it’s something that could harm me.”

“It can’t. I’m more of a danger to myself than I would ever be to you.” There was something in his eyes that begged me to see him at the same time he was asking to remain invisible. I understood what that was like, but still had to ask.

“Am I safe with you, Jaasir?”

“No.” His answer was confident in a way that made my stomach tight but he added, “But I’m also not safe with you either so I guess that puts us on level ground.”

He wasn’t talking about physical harm. That much I understood. But what he was referring to—my heart, my emotional wellbeing—was in danger. That terrified me but not enough to turn around and go back.

I was already being a fool for this man and I felt that this was only the beginning.

Sol.

You good?

Are you?

I read the sarcasm in my brother’s text. It basically meant fuck off and leave me alone.

Write some music or do something else productive.

Yeah

“You’re missing the best part.”

No, I’m not.
