“Val called.”

My head tilted back giving me a better view of the dark discerning look angled down at me.

“I told her not to. I also didn’t give her your number.”

“But you gave her access to your cloud account.”

“Shit,” I hissed and he chuckled, moving closer.

“Yeah, she’s resourceful.”

A part of me was grateful that he had come. I was almost relieved but I wouldn’t tell him that seeing him here now somehow seeped into my soul, breathing courage back into me.

“You shouldn’t have come. We decided…”

“Youdecided but we can discuss that later. Right now, I want to make sure you’re good. That mess out there is because of me.” He pointed to the door and my eyes narrowed, moving over his shoulder before they were on him again.

I tensed, throat swelling from the reality I had to swallow down. This wasn’t his fault. It was mine, for allowing myself to believe that I could be normal, just once.

“It’s not and it really doesn’t matter. They’re not looking for you, they’re looking for me, so…”

It was a struggle to keep the hurt I was experiencing from filtering into my voice. I was overwhelmed and felt backed into a corner. My life had gone from comfort to chaos in the blink of an eye and I had no clue how I was going to deal with the fallout.

Eventually they would get tired of chasing me. Clocking my every move would prove fruitless because those people out there thrived off a story. There was no story here. Just my boring life. Me working at this bar and being a good mother to my daughter.

And then there was Jaah.

But he would be gone soon and my life would shift back to normal or as normal as it could be after him. Nothing would be the same. Ever so slowly I shifted away from him, needing space.

“Fuck, Cadence. It’s not just aboutyou.”

I was confused. I didn’t understand what he expected or wanted. My eyes narrowed on his handsome face. This would be so much easier if he didn’t look the way he did and didn’t make me feel the way I did.

“Youwill be just fine. It’s my life that’s spinning off its axis.”

“And I want to help.” He moved closer. “Let me help make this right.” His hands slid into my hair and his forehead lowered to mine. “I know you want to run but running won’t fix any of this.”

“I’m not running,” I whispered.

“You are, from me.”

Our eyes met, his dark and dangerous, loaded with promises that he couldn’t possibly keep. A brewing intensity that made my heart shiver.

Those promises lingering on the tip of his tongue made being with him dangerous because no matter what logic said, I wanted to believe this could work. Jaasir was a living, breathing reminder of how I’d ended up here in the first place.

What I ran to get away from but when his eyes made those promises, I had an overwhelming sense of calm and a feeling that he could be home.

I reluctantly pulled away and glanced around the bar. No one was paying attention to what was happening between us or at least not at that very moment.

They probably looked away not wanting to intrude on what clearly appeared to be intimate and private. Well everyone expect Del. She didn’t give a damn.

“I told her to go home. You can make sure she gets there. And then you can leave.” The warning was delivered with a tone of malice. I smiled softly and bit my lip to suppress my reaction.

“I can do that.” Jaah’s eyes never left me when he responded to Del. This beautiful, determined man didn’t give a damn about her authority.

“Cadee, you make sure you let me know when you get there, okay?”

I nodded and felt his eyes still on me when I inched away from him and glanced at Del. “I will.”
