Abikini.

Hers was a one piece.

“Do you like them?”

“I do, they’re perfect. Did you say thank you?”

“I did.” She bounced on her toes. “I said thank you two times.” She held up chubby fingers. “One for buying me pretty swimsuits and the other time after she helped me put this one on.” She slapped her hands over her little belly which slightly stuck out. “So can I swim now, Mommy? I promise to swim real good and be safe.”

I rolled my eyes and pulled her to me, pressing another kiss to her forehead.

“Let me go put some clothes on and then we’ll see.”

I shoved hair from her face and then headed to the door so that I could clean up, get dressed, and decide if I trusted my kid to swim with a stranger. Certified or not.

“Good morning, Ms. Monroe.” I startled, slapping my hand over my chest when I reached the last step and a body appeared out of nowhere.

Well maybe not nowhere. I simply hadn’t noticed where she came from. My eyes swept the woman who was dressed in black capri pants and a fitted polo.

She was mid-forties maybe, based on the maturity of her face and smile lines that crinkled at the corners of her eyes and mouth, but beautiful with her chestnut brown skin which appeared void of makeup. She had her hair pulled back into a ponytail that reached the nape of her neck.

“Good morning…”

Her smile expanded and she shifted two massive, grey fluffy towels from both arms to one and extended a hand. “I’m Synthia, Sol’s house manager. He mentioned you and your lovely daughter would be here with us for a while. We keep a small staff, because he likes his privacy, but there are enough of us around that should you need anything, please don’t hesitate to ask.”

Staff.

“Oh, thank you but I’m sure I won’t need anything.”

She nodded and pointed to the kitchen. “Chef made pancakes and chopped fruit for Gracie this morning. She’s a lovely child by the way. Such a pleasure and very smart and veryanimated.”

I internally groaned imagining just how animated Gracie could be.

“Thank you. I hope she wasn’t any trouble.”

“No, no trouble at all. There’s coffee in the kitchen and breakfast is warming on the stove. I’ll send someone to fix your plate…”

“Oh God, no. Please don’t. I can do it myself.”

I had no interest in allowing these people to wait on me hand and foot.

“Sol has informed us that we are to make sure you stay is comfortable. We truly don’t mind.”

I’m sure he did.

Because he doesn’t want me to leave.

“Did you serve him this morning?” I was curious about the type of man he was. He lived a life of luxury so it wouldn’t be unexpected that he had people fussing over him.

“No…” Her smile was genuine and warm. “Sol is very self-sufficient and doesn’t like anyone fussing over him. We handle the day to day things like keeping the house clean and Chef cooks but he handles feeding himself. Sol also took care of your Gracie this morning. Fixed her plate, made sure she ate her food, and cleaned up after her when they were done.”

“Oh…”

That surprised me. So he wasn’t a diva.

“Help yourself to anything you like. If you need anything, just ask.”

“I will, thank you.”
