“Good to know because I was seriously trying to figure out how the fuck we were gonna eat if you wanted me to get rid of my chef.”

“You don’t cook?”

He nodded. “I can do a little something but I doubt it would be enough and ordering gets old fast. I have to suffer through that when I’m on the road. I like homecooked food as much as possible.”

Another reminder that this life wasn’t conducive for kids.

“Mommy, look at me?”

My eyes shifted to Gracie and the minute she had my full attention, she released Maddie and began thrashing wildly.

I sucked in a breath when I noticed her going under but Jaah placed his hand on my thigh with a firm grip. My eyes shot up to his and he tossed his chin toward Gracie.

“Let her learn. She’s safe,” he assured me and sure enough she sank until the water was up to her chin but she never went complete under

After a few minutes of struggling to keep her head above water, she reached for Maddie who gently lifted her just enough to place Gracie within reach of the noodle.

“Mommy, did you see me swim?”

“I did, Gracie. That was good.”

She whipped her head toward Maddie. “I’m ready for more now, please.”

Maddie chuckled and nodded. “Okay let’s try to float on your back. You think you can do that?”

“I can. I can do anything.”

“See, she’s fine.”

His fingers glided across my skin and I shivered, feeling the reaction from my head to my toes but then the sensation was gone and so was he. Jaah walked to one of the lounge chairs and lifted his phone, answering a call which had his face shifting into annoyance.

He didn’t say much and I tried not to listen but it was hard not to when every few minutes his eyes landed on me. Eventually I had his back as he moved out of listening range to finish the call.

Yeah, that’s surely about me.

A few minutes later he returned, gripping the phone with a strained look on his face. “You good out here with her?”

“Yes, is everything okay?”

He nodded tightly. “Yeah, just business. I’m going to head inside to check on a few things. If you need me…”

“I won’t. We’re fine. Do whatever you need to do.”

He was gone seconds later and so was the ease I felt from being here. It was impossible to escape my life because reminders were always lurking in the background.

I looked over at my baby who was oblivious to the chaos and turmoil that was looming. No matter what, my top priority was making sure she remained untarnished by the ugliness that existed in the world.

The last thing I wanted to be doing at this very moment was dealing with anything associated with Sheets. He was the type who didn’t understand leaving well enough alone and fucking with me apparently was his main focus at the present.

The call I’d just received from Drew telling me that Sheets would settle for two and a half million was laughable. There was no way in hell I was giving him that type of money. Luckily Drew agreed.

Drew had also bluffed, stating that he now held the full video of that night and would release it if Sheets didn’t let this go. That meant we had to find the got damn video and so far the original hadn’t turned up nor had Drew locked down anything pointing to Sheets being the one who’d leaked the clip.

We knew it was him. The footage circulating played right into his hands making it appear that I was being my typical hotheaded self and had attacked him unprovoked. Too much of a coincidence. I had a history of acting without considering consequences so it was easy to believe that not much had changed in my world.
