I busted out a laugh. “Got it. Let me just run down the list. Fully exploit my top notch, in-house dick. Make Val proud.”

The minute I finished running down my Val to do list, the air shifted and my head lifted to find the last person I needed to hear any parts of this conversation standing at the bottom of the stairs. The smug grin he sported was proof that he had, at the very least, heard the last part.

Busted.

Embarrassed.

My cheeks heated from the way his eyes blazed into me with the promise of being fully at my disposal for everything he’d just heard.

“Val, I have to go.”

“Why? Time to jump on that dick? Damn girl, you move fast. I knew I raised you right.”

“Oh God, can you not?” I tucked my chin hating the deep rumble of his laugh. I was the only one who could hear what she said but he knew Val so there was no doubt he could easily imagine the way she was currently playing the role of hype man.

“He’s there, isn’t he?”

“He is…” I carefully lifted my eyes to find his waiting.

“Oh well, enjoy.”

She ended the call and I gripped my phone in my hands. Jaasir and I remained in a visual standoff until he broke the silence.

“We gonna discuss this checklist that you and Val were talking about?”

My cheeks flamed and heat crawled up my neck.

“Can we just pretend you didn’t hear any of that?”

“Yeah we can because I have something else I want to run by you.” When I reached him at the bottom of the stairs he guided us to his office and pulled me down into his lap after he sat.

“I have something I need to show you, but before I do I need you to keep an open mind about all this.”

I angled my head back, staring up at him to find the stress from earlier back, seeping into his relaxed demeanor.

“This is about the call you got while we were at the park?”

“Yeah, I asked Drew to take care of a few things for me.”

He pointed to the folder.

I hesitated but slowly lifted the folder, carefully searching the documents inside. With each one, my eyes narrowed and then went wide with confusion.

“What is this?”

“A way for me to guarantee that no one, not even Dresden, has access to Gracie.”

“But how did you do this…” I flipped through the pages a few more times then looked up at him.

“Anything is possible if you’re willing to pay to make it happen.”

I shook my head. “I don’t understand. This isn’t real…”

“It’s real if we say it is. These are official documents, Cadence. No judge can dispute them.”

“Nobody is going to believe this.”

“People believe what you tell them to believe. We leak these and everyone will run with it. The only people who know the truth are me, you, and Drew.”
