“Two of your friends would be dead if I hadn’t got involved.” I began, accepting that if I was open, she might give me the same courtesy. “Toby would hav-.” I continued but she cut me off.

“You tried to kill Toby. I don’t understa-.”

I cut back over her.

“AsI was saying, Toby would have died in that hospital bed if I hadn’t got involved, why do you think Charon relocated him? Lorenzo found out where he was.” I said and her brows lifted slightly as she took this information in.

“You gave them a heads up.” she said, “Fuck.”

I gave her a confused look, “What?”

“Toby is making it really fucking hard not to completely hate you.” she said through gritted teeth.

A smile pulled at the edge of my mouth that I supressed with a swipe of my hand.

“So that’s where you were? The hospital?” I asked.

“Like you didn’t already know that.” She rolled her eyes at me. “And no, he's at his parents place now. He wants me to forgive you, because you two are best buds or whatever now.” she said, her voice dripping with a mixture of sarcasm and distain.

I didn’t reallydofriends, and I didn’t count the pup as someone I was close with, but I supposed I did have a slight soft spot for him. The visits I’d made to him in the hospital had started off out of guilt. I’d sat by his bedside for hours when he was in that coma, willing him to wake up. When he had and we had spoken about what had happened I thought I could walk away with the guilt gone. But I found myself going back time and time again, just to see him, and to talk. He had asked me to keep Nutmeg safe, and I’d promised him that I would do everything in my power to. I’d kept that promise as best I could. I didn’t think that her being in the house was safe, but I also knew that if she tried to run, I’d be the one to drag her back this time. I don’t trust Lorenzo not to hurt her. She needs to behave.

“I don’t deserve your forgiveness.” I said.

I didn’t even feel like I deserved his, but he was hard to say no to.

“Just, just tell me when you’re seeing him, I’ll cover for you, but try not to make a habit of it Nutmeg, Lorenzo isn’t an idiot, there is only so much I can do.”

“Well Toby has been through too much, so the least I can do is give him what he wants and forgive you.” she began.

“No.” I said firmly.

“Yes,” she said back, her spine straightening. “You don’t get to tell me what to do.” She jutted her chin out. “And I don’t need you to cover for me. I’ll be less…” She rolled her hand around as she searched for the word she wanted to use, then sagged a little, “less of a dick to you. But I still hate you for everything before Toby.”

My stomach clenched at her words. I was beginning to give up on hating her, but she was clinging to it. I thought of the way she had acted towards me the night of the gala, she had kissed me, and then when she found me attempting to kill Toby, even as he bled all over his kitchen floor, she hadn’t seemed like she hated me. But apparently, she did.

I didn’t let the hurt show on my face though. I just nodded, knowing full well that I would continue to keep her safe no matter what she said. I didn’t understand how I felt about her, but I knew that I would keep my promise to the man who loved her. The one who truly loved her, not the psychopathic murderer we live with.

“One other thing,” I said, after I finished the last bite of my breakfast and picked up my coffee. “Stop whatever it is that you’re planning. I don’t care who you have on your side, Lorenzo ismineto take down.” I said fiercely, the command clear in my words.

She took a long sip of her coffee before she spoke.

“No. He’s taken my brother, he tried to take Toby, he’s threatened everyone I care about, he’s taken away my life, my future. He’s mine.”

I slammed my cup down with enough force to splash hot liquid out through the tiny hole in the lid. “Back off Megan.”

She mirrored my actions and leaned closer to me, “You back off Adonis.”

“No.” I snapped.

She rose to her feet. “I’ll take you down too if you get in my way, I want my life back.” she said in a dark tone and walked away towards the cafe.

I watched her leave. My chest was rising and falling heavily as I let the frustration and anger swirl around inside me. Why did she have to make everything so fucking hard?
