He smiled at her, and she huffed before unlocking her car and shoving the suitcase back into the trunk.
“So you’re still babysitting for him, that’s not a good thing.” she said, flicking her hair over her shoulder.
“For you it is.”
He opened the back door of her car and climbed in, completely ignoring the fact that I was still there, or that she looked completely outraged by his actions.
She looked up at me with acan you believe this guylook on her face and I shrugged.
“Just go with it.” I said and made my way around to get back into the car too.
“Are you planning on telling us why you’re being such a bossy piece of shit?” Meg said as she sat in the driver’s seat and pulled on her seatbelt.
“It’s not safe for Tobias to be at his apartment. If Lorenzo gets wind of him being there, and he will, he won’t sendmeto finish the job.” I twisted uncomfortably in my seat to face him, and he gave me a pointed look.
“Well fuck,” I breathed, “Where to then? You got some secret hide out, an underground bunker? A safe house in the middle of nowhere? Cabin in the woods? You’ll have to run inside and grab my passport for me if we’re leaving the country.”
He rolled his eyes at me and shook his head like he didn’t understand me.
“No. I have a place. Lorenzo thinks I sold it when I moved into the house, you can stay there.” he said and gave Meg the address.
She kept quiet as she drove. I placed my hand on her thigh and squeezed gently. A small smile tugged at her lips at the contact but slipped away quickly as Adonis and I started to make small talk.
My gaze kept drifting to her face and the lines between her brows deepened as the journey progressed and our conversation continued past pleasantries. She had never seen us interact before; she had no idea how much we had bonded during those hospital visits.We had bonded hard.
We pulled up outside a fancy looking tailors and Don got out of the car first.
“So, you two are what, best friends?” she asked and started to chew on the inside of her cheek.
“The bestest friends in the whole world, bffs,” I joked, “Nothing quite bonds you like attempted murder.”
“Sure, if you’re attempting to murder the same person, not each other.” she said quietly.
I leaned over to her and placed a gentle kiss to her cheek.
“Think about what you just said little one.” I murmured and raised my brows at her, then climbed out of the car to go and check out my new secret hide out.
Adonis opened a door to the side of the shop and led us up a steep set of stairs. Another door met us at the top and he opened it up before tossing a set of keys to me.
“I have the spare set, just in case.” he said and headed across the open plan area to sit down on a large royal blue velvet sofa.
Meg followed me inside and went straight to the kitchen to check the fridge and fill up the freezer, making some comments under her breath about him shockingly having food in there. I took in the space around me. It was simple, no clutter, no personal items, it didn’t feel much like a home, but I felt comfortable here.
“This is nice.” I complimented Don and he shrugged like he didn’t really agree, but something in the way he sat made me think that this was his happy place. Or at least somewhere that he enjoyed being.
“You’ll be ok here?” Meg asked me as she sat down on the opposite end of the sofa.
“Of course I will.” I smiled and they both smiled back.
I flopped down between them and tugged Meg under my arm.
I noticed Don shift next to me and clear his throat, “Erm, I’ll leave you to get settled in, call me if you need anything, and Nutmeg, I’ll cover for you at home, but please don’t stay out too late. There is only so much I can do to keep -.” he trailed off, I knew exactly what he was going to say.To keep her safe.But he wouldn’t admit that to her. “Just don’t be an idiota.” he finished and rose to his feet.
“Thanks for this man.” I said and moved to stand up, but he shoved me back down with a small grunt and headed to the door.
“Alone at last.” I sang in Meg’s ear, and she grinned as her body instantly relaxed, and she groaned happily. I had the girl I had been craving for so long here in my arms, looking fucking incredible, and we had my new bestie covering for us.Hmm… what to do…
“Finally.” she agreed, “How are you feeling?”
