My jaw clenched, then my toast popped up, giving me a decent reason to turn away from him.

“I strongly advise that you listen this time Adonis.” I said as I grabbed the toast from the toaster and tossed it onto a plate. “There are plenty of sharp objects in this room.”

My stomach clenched at my own words, and I shoved a slice of toast into my mouth before I could let the feeling turn into anything worse.

“Don’t tease me like that Nutmeg,” he growled from close behind me, “Just let me apologise. Properly.”

His hand landed on my shoulder.

I twisted around to face him and pushed his hand away. “No, I don’t want to hear it, it changes nothing.”

I took another bite of the toast and glared at him as I chewed. Forcing the bread down. “Why do you even care how I feel about you?” I asked.

“You confuse me, you don’t want me to talk to you, yet you keep asking me questions.” He cocked his head to one side, but he didn’t continue speaking, he just held my gaze.

“You’re one to talk, you want to apologise, yet you don’t actually do it, you try to start a conversation with me, but you don’t answer my questions.”

He swiped his thumb over his lower lip and tossed me his signature smirk. “I guess we’re both as bad as each other.”

He turned to walk away, and my eyes locked onto a jagged, red cut that sliced deep into his back, it started at the base of his shoulder blade and disappeared into the black lines of a snake’s head. It looked fresh.

“How did that happen?”

I didn’t mean for the words to come out, and Idefinitelydidn’t mean to sound concerned. But I had, and he had clearly heard it.Goddammit Megan.

“My back?” He looked back at me over his shoulder. “Nothing to worry yourself over, it’s cute that you care though. Maybe you’ll crack soon.”

I opened my mouth to protest. Ididn’tcare, and I wasn’t going to crack. I was just curious. The wound hadn’t been treated at all, that was obvious, so no one else knew about it, why?

“You should get it looked at,” I said flatly, choosing to keep my protests to myself. There was no point voicing them, in fact I think he enjoyed it when I was combative. “Before it gets infected.” I added.

“Yes nurse.” His eyes darkened as he teased me, and I shoved the toast into my mouth again to stop myself from reacting.Arsehole.

He left the kitchen, and I shoved the last bite into my mouth before starting on the next piece. I looked down and noticed that crumbs had fallen and stuck to my blouse. I brushed them off and hunted for a dustpan and brush to clean them up.

Clive came in just as I pulled my head out of the cupboard that I was searching inside.

“Clive, Hi, erm, where can I find a dustpan and brush?” I asked.

“Don’t worry about cleaning up M, I’ll get one of the girls to come and do that.”

“No, I can do it, it’s not a problem, if you can just point me in the right direction.” I insisted.

“M, the boss won’t be happy if I let you do that. I’m sorry, you have to play by his rules.” He gave me a sad look.Did he know that I wasn’t here by choice?“While I have you here though is there anything I can get for you to make you more comfortable? I have just put fresh towels into the guest bedroom for you.”Of course he knew.

I pulled my lower lip between my teeth for a moment, “Thank you Clive, I don’t need anything, and I’m sorry for breaking that ornament earlier, and I’m sorry for anything else that any of us break while I’m living here.” I said.

There was no doubt in my mind that the three of us - Lorenzo, Adonis and myself - would be causing a lot of damage while living together. I hoped he understood what I had meant though, that I wouldn’t be staying for long. I’d go through with my plan, and then I’d be gone. He would only have to put up with this for a short while.

“No problem, M, just call me if you need anything.” he said and gave me a gentle smile.

“I will.” I smiled back.

I abandoned my mess, feeling bad about it, but knowing that it wasn’t worth an argument with anyone over. I made my way to the stairs and heard Lorenzo leave his office. I rushed up them, hoping to avoid another encounter, but his voice hit me a second before I turned the corner to head to the guest bedroom.

“Still playing that game are we amore mio?”

“No games Lorenzo, this is the only way I will stay.” I called down to him.
