“For barging in on you two.” he said and looked around the room as if he wasn’t sure what to do with himself.

“Oh fuck off Don, you knew I was here. He probably sent you to follow me didn’t he?” Meg piped up from beside me and I placed a hand on her shoulder.

“That’s no way to talk to your new lover.” I chastised her and Don stopped looking around and focused on her, shooting her a pissed off accusing glare.

“Seriously Nutmeg, are youtryingto fuck up your chances with the only man who deserves you?” Don snapped, and I shook my head at him.

“She hasn’t.” I said simply and shrugged before falling back down onto the sofa and smiling between my friend and my girl.

“What?” Don’s eye bulged and I hadn’t realised quite how dark they were up until now.

“I’ve literally just gone over this with Meg, she can eat all of the cake.” I said and folded my hands behind my head. “Now are you two staying for coffee or going?”

“Staying.” They said in unison.

Perfect.

“Great. Don, you’re Italian, you probably make it best.” I said and his face reddened, but he didn’t argue, he knew I was right. Instead he turned to the kitchenette and began to brew our coffees as Meg came and sat back down beside me.

“What were you saying?” I asked her and wrapped an arm around her shoulder.

“Nothing.” she said, her entire face turning the same shade of red as Don’s had a moment ago, but she wasn’t angry like he was. Was she embarrassed?

“Come on, tell me.” I whispered and tugged her closer.

“Moment’s gone.” she said but snuggled into my side as we waited for Don to bring over our mugs.

“You’re really ok with what happened?” he asked as he placed the mugs down on the coffee table and sat down on a chair opposite us.

“Yep.” I said, “We’ll work out how it works as we go along, but I’m happy, relieved actually.”

“Wait? Work what out?” Don frowned.

“Us,” I said, pointing between the three of us.

“Oh. I think you’re great but-.”

I laughed, “You’re great too, and any man would be lucky to have you, but that’s not what I meant. I want her, you want her, and Ithinkshe wants us too.” I said and looked down at Meg for confirmation.

“I think so.” she confessed then sat up and looked between us with a hungry look crossing her face, “But boys, never say never.”

Don

We drove back to the house separately and I was thankful for the space. Toby’s acceptance of what me and Nutmeg had done last night was refreshing, and weird as fuck. I wasn’t a fully possessive arsehole, not like my stepfather, but I wasn’t sure if I was good with sharing someone.

But if I wasn’t, then I was the dick who couldn’t accept what she wanted and what would make her happy. Damn Toby and his dumb accepting attitude. If I wanted her, then I had no choice. My new friend would become my what? Not my boyfriend, is there even a term for it?I don’t know. But it would be something new and strange and honestly, I wasn’t even sure if she wanted me past what we had done.

‘I think so’, that was all she had said about it.

Last night I’d gone into her room because she was all I could think about when I’d been so close to death, and I thought I’d heard something in her voice when she left me that message. I suppose I’d been right. But straight after, we argued. Would she want to be with someone who pissed her off the way I do?

I enjoyed her pushing me, most of the time. I’m not a nice man, and I don’t deserve kindness. Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to her. Maybe that’s why a small part of me is hopeful for a future, because if we ever survive Lorenzo, I know that she won’t give me anything I don’t deserve; she would keep me in check.

I pulled into the garage beside her and jumped out of my car. Nutmeg was touching up her lipstick in the mirror and I couldn’t stop myself from staring. She smirked when she noticed me, and I raised a brow at her.

“Stop staring, anyone would think you have a thing for me.” she teased as she stepped out of her car and smoothed down her black skirt.
