The sound of footsteps coming from behind me caught my attention and I turned to see Don coming towards me, concern etched into his face.

“What did he do?” he asked quietly.

“Doesn’t matter, I’m fine.” I said and offered him a small smile.

“I’ll kill him.” he muttered, then ran his gaze over me slowly. He reached out a hand and pushed my hair away from my neck.

“If I wipe here,” he ran a finger gently down the side of my throat, “What will I find?”

“You already know.” I said, pulling away from his touch.

A pained look crossed his face, “He sat outside your door all night you know? That’s the only reason I didn’t check in on you.”

“I’m not mad about that,” I said, “I’m a big strong girl, I can handle myself.”

I turned to head down the stairs as he mumbled something in Italian behind me and headed back the way he had come.

Lorenzo was still sitting in the dining room, and I sat far away from him again. He looked up from his paper, pushed the platter of pastries towards me, then began to read aloud, as if he hadn’t done a damn thing.

I ignored the food, choosing to sip my coffee slowly until he finished reading.

“Can I go to work now.” I asked.

“You haven’t eaten.” he said with a frown.

“I’ll eat later.” I said and stood up. “So do I have yourpermissionto go?”

“Fine.” he said through gritted teeth. “Come here first.” He pointed to the floor beside him.

I hesitated for a moment then decided it was in my best interest to do as I was told for now. I stood in the spot where he was pointing, and he took my hand and placed a gentle kiss to my knuckles.

I turned my face away from him, looking at the door as he whispered against my skin.

“Please stop testing me amore mio.”

I didn’t respond and he dropped my hand.

“You can go.” he said, louder now, and I hastily left the dining room and ran to my office to fall into the arms of my best friend.

“He’s going out in ten minutes Sunshine, do what you must and donotworry about the rest of us.” Cooper said as he came back into our office.

Lorenzo had called him away fifteen minutes ago. I had not expected him to come back with that information though.

I’d told Cooper that I needed to get away, just run the fuck away for a while until I was better prepared for this fight. Toby would be safe with Don and Charon’s protection, Coop promised me he could handle everything, and Don had already admitted that he was a huge reason that my friends were safe. All I had to do was go.

He sat down at one of the computers and I stood up to wait by the office door, sipping coffee and tapping the toe of my shoe against the floor.

“I said ten minutes, sit down, you’re annoying me.” Cooper said.

“You’ll miss my annoying habits when I’m not here.” I said with a smile, and he laughed.

“You’ll be back though, so sit the fuck down.” he said, and I slumped back into my chair.

“I can’t believe he’s done this to you,” Cooper said sadly, and I frowned at him.

“Done what?” I asked.
