“You’re second guessing yourself because he’s actually scared you.”

“No, I’m just being smart.” I said.

But I still began to chew on my lip. Coop was right, but I was too stubborn to admit it out loud.

“Ok, well, be smart, and come back andwork withAdonis.” he said, giving me a stern look.

I barked a laugh, “Absolutely not.”

The heavy sound of the front door closing caught my attention and I leapt up.

Coop stood up too and wrapped his arms around me, squeezing me tight before letting me leave.

I slowly made my way to the foyer and diverted towards Lorenzo’s office. I tapped on the door and waited. Nothing. I pushed the door open and found the room empty.Perfect, addio cazzo!

I ran up the stairs and into the guest bedroom. I knelt on the floor and pulled my old duffel bag out from beneath the bed. It used to contain all of my weapons, but now only a few remained. Lorenzo had left me with my prized possessions but had taken everything else. He had wanted to take it all from me, but I claimed that I might need some kind of protection if he wasn’t around, and he decided that I was right.

I threw the bag over my shoulder and ran across the landing to Lorenzo’s bedroom. Once inside, I fell into the wardrobe and pulled random clothes from hangers. First thing this morning I’d packed a few essentials from the guest bedroom onto my duffel, but it wouldn’t be enough.

I shoved the clothes into the bag and grabbed a pair of trainers and a pair of boots. It pained me to leave so many heels behind, but I would be back for them soon. I just needed a little time.

I sighed as I thought about my plan to kill Lorenzo at our wedding. It would have been perfect, but I couldn’t do it. I was drowning in self-doubt, and I needed to get the hell out of here before it consumed me to the point where I had no fight in me. I would not lose myself to this man.

The sound of heavy footsteps caught my attention, and I froze momentarily before launching the bag over my shoulder, jumping to my feet and running out of the wardrobe.

My body collided with a bulk of muscle, but before I could open my mouth a hand slammed over it. Panic rose inside me as I stared up into his eyes. A second later I was being thrown over his shoulder and dragged from the room. Words caught in my throat as my heartbeat echoed in my ears. My hair fell over my face, and I squirmed around in an attempt to move it and get a look at where I was being taken.

“Smettila.” he murmured before closing a door and placing me back on my feet.

I dropped my bag with a loud thud, pushed my hair away from my face, and opened my mouth to shout at him, but he pushed me back against the door and closed his hand around my mouth once more.

“He’s back.” Adonis whispered into my ear, “Stay quiet Nutmeg.”

He released my mouth and I opened it again.

“What the fu-.”

He cut me off, but this time it was his lips that collided with mine. His hand came up to tangle into my hair and I moaned into his mouth. He pulled back a fraction to whisper for me to ‘just listen for once’, and then pushed his tongue between my lips. I parted them and wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling myself up onto my tiptoes, forgetting why I was even crushed between him and the door.Fuck you Adonis and your stupid delicious mouth.

A loud bang had us pulling apart and we both stared at the door. Adonis looked down at my duffel bag on his bedroom floor and groaned.

“You should have dropped the bag, now he’s going to think you’re gone.” he whispered.

“Like that would make any difference.” I snapped. “I’m still going.”

Just not yet apparently.

“Seriously?” he asked, his attention drawn back to me and away from the shouting and smashing of god knows what that was coming from down the hall.

His eyes searched mine, but I had no idea what for. I suddenly felt vulnerable, and I didn’t like it.

“Yes. Stop looking at me like that.” I said and pushed him away.

“Like what?” he asked, his brows pulling together, making his dark eyes look almost black.

“Like you’re, I don’t know, disappointed in me or something.” I lowered my voice as a noise that sounded a lot like something being thrown down the stairs met us.

Adonis’ gaze didn’t leave mine.
