“Nope. Well. No, I definitely developed thesexything later on, the murderous side has been there for a long time, but I didn’t act on it until I was sure of myself.” she explained, “Mum’s death triggered it, but I was a kid, I didn’t know shit at that age.”

“Me too. The trigger that is.” I admitted.

“You weren’t like this before?” she asked, pushing up onto her elbow to look at me.

“I’ve always been a moody stronzo, but the whole unapproachable bad boy thing came after Mum was murdered. I was violent when I was a teenager, but that was just scraps with the local boys. If it wasn’t for Uncle Sal, I’d probably not be here though. When Mum died, I went on a rampage, taking it out on anyone who looked at me the wrong way, but I had no idea what I was doing. Sal trained me the same way he trained Lorenzo. I’m thankful for that.” I stared up at the ceiling as I spoke. How had we gone from hating each other tothis?

Meg’s hand cupped my cheek, and she tilted my face towards hers.

“I get it now,” she said, “This was inevitable. Toby saw it, and now I do too. We’re drawn to people who hurt in the same way as we do.”

“Why are you drawn to him then?” I asked. I wasn’t angry, or jealous, just curious.

She looked thoughtful for a moment, “He’s Toby.”

She smiled, and I had to admit that I actually understood those two simple words. I liked him, I was ok with him being with my Nutmeg, and if anyone asked me why, I’d have to answer the same way.Fucking Toby.

I nodded and kissed her gently before sitting up and stretching. I glanced at the door, wondering how much longer we might have, then my gaze snagged on her duffel bag still sitting on my bedroom floor.

“Don’t go.” I said.

She sat up beside me and narrowed her eyes at me.

“Don’t go, don’t let him do this to you. You’re a fighter Nutmeg, do not allow one incident to fuck with your head. You can handle anything, and we will end him. I promise you that babygirl, we will. So stay, show him who he’s fucking with.” I grasped her face in my hands, “Show him that you’re unbreakable.”

She blinked at me then a cruel smile pulled at her lips.

“You really think I can do it?” she asked.

“With a little help.” I said.

She pulled away and scowled at me.

“I don’tneedhelp.” she ground the words out.

“Prove it.” I said, matching her tone.

I knew damn well what I was doing. If she did the same to me I’d be going above and beyond to prove myself, just so I could sit back at the end of it all and gloat. Plus, I liked it when she got all feisty with me. It seemed that our rivalry knew no ends. And I was more than happy to play on that to get him out of her head. Whatever he had done to her I’d not let it destroy her. I’d push her buttons in a way only I knew how and use that to build her up because I loved the way she looked dressed in confidence and power. But at the end of it all, Lorenzo’s death would still be mine.

“I will, and when I do, I expect an apology for battling me over it time and time again.” she said, tilting her head up as though she was my superior.

I pushed down a smile and gave her a mildly doubtful look. “Mhm, that won’t be happening.”

“It will Donny, just wait. I’ll kill that piece of shit, and I’ll do it without you.”

I smirked at her and pushed her a little more, “Not if I do it first.”

She clicked her tongue at me but before she could bite back with some pissed off remark a voice came thundering from the hallway.

“Tell your whore goodbye Adonis, you’re going out looking for Megan, NOW.”

Lorenzo’s fist slammed against the door, and I rolled my eyes.

“I’ll be downstairs in five minutes.” I said.

Bubble well and truly burst.

“Make it three.” he snapped.
