“Which is why I need to know what went wrong when you did. He never told anyone the story, all anyone knows is that you shot him, and he didn’t die.”

“That’s all there really is to it. I caught him by surprise, shot him once, he got back up, he fought like a mad man, I shot him again, he didn’t get back up, he just stared at me with a smile on his face as I shot him a third time. I suppose my fuck up was lack of variety. I should have gone for the head, at least once. Rather than aiming all three into his chest. The only advice I have for you is keep shooting. Pure skill will do nothing for you Vixen, no matter how good you are.” he said, and I smiled at the small compliment that I was certain was in there somewhere.

“Well if I know how to do one thing it’s how to shoot a guy.” I said cockily.

“Don’t run off before you’re sure they’re dead though.” he warned, knocking my confidence down a peg.

Slash, he was referring to Slash.

“I should really apologise for that.” I mumbled and Charon laughed.

“Yeah, you should, my wolves would be a lot more willing to have your back if you did.” he said.

I sighed heavily. I was awful at apologies. But I had tried to kill an innocent man. Not that Slash was a good guy or anything, but he wasn’tmyenemy. He hadn’t killed my brother like I’d been told he had. Nope, that was all Lorenzo.

“I’ll work on something I guess.” I said. “He’d appreciate an engraved pocketknife, right?” I asked.

“No,” Charon said and pulled out his phone, “Just say sorry.”

He handed me his phone and I looked down at the screen. He had already dialled Slash’s number.

“Go on.” he urged.

I raised the phone to my ear and spoke, saying the words that I knew would get me what I needed, and get me a step closer to peace.

***

Lorenzo had been all over me all day. He had no idea where I’d been and genuinely believed that I’d spent the night alone in the guest bedroom of his house while my big bad guard dog kept watch and stopped any stray dicks from entering me.

He had made a few comments about Adonis being attracted to me, but it didn’t seem as though he truly believed it. It was more like he was digging and trying to catch me out. I’d learned my lesson though; I’d let my mask slip when he mentioned Toby before, and I’d never allow that to happen again.

Once he was in bed I finally relaxed. I’d not seen Don much today, he had popped in and out, appearing annoyed by my presence, much to Lorenzo’s satisfaction. Although in one moment I thought that Lorenzo had looked disappointed, no doubt he was looking for a reason to hurt someone. Afterall, it was his greatest talent.

I locked myself away in the guest bedroom and curled up in the bed that I’d claimed as mine, but sleep refused to come for me. I laid there for hours before I came to the decision to get up and explore. I was sick of feeling so trapped in this place, and with Lorenzo asleep I felt safe to do what I pleased.

I slipped a thin white robe on over the small tank top and booty shorts that I’d chosen to sleep in and carefully opened my door. The hallway was pitch black and silent. I padded across the marbled floor to the staircase and quickly hurried down it, staying as quiet as I could.

To the right of the foyer was the large lounge, a room I knew too well. To the far left was a hall that lead to my office and the gym. Beyond the gym were six other doors on either side of the hallway. I walked down past the gym and selected a door at random. I knew one of these rooms was a games room, but I couldn’t recall which one.

I pushed open a door and found stacks of boxes. I flicked on the light and read the labels. They all seemed to contain Selene’s belongings and I wondered why they were in here. Why had he not got rid of them? Or sent them to Sal’s?

I switched off the light and closed the door and selected another one. Behind the new door was something far more appealing to me. A wide smile spread across my face as I stepped inside and made a beeline for the gorgeous instrument in the middle of the room.

I ran my fingers over the keys of the grand piano to remove the thin sprinkle of dust that was sitting on them. Clearly it hadn’t been played in a while, which was a shame.

The light spilling in from the hallway was enough for me to see by, and I decided it had been far too long since I last played. I sat down on the small stool and strained my neck as I thought about what I wanted to play.

Jason’s favourite piece came straight to the front of my thoughts and my fingers began to move before I had even realised that I was going to play it. I effortlessly made my way through Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, losing myself to the dark melody and allowing myself to feel. A tear rolled down my face as I played the final notes and I let out a shuddering sigh.

“That was beautiful.” Adonis said in a low, quiet voice from the doorway.

I stilled and quickly brushed the tear away, pulling myself together before he could see me cry. I may be letting my walls down slowly with these guys, but that was one that I wanted to avoid dropping as often as I could.

“Thank you.” I said quietly. Still not turning to look at him.

“Can you play something else for me?” he asked, this time his voice was closer, and a second later his hand landed on my shoulder. My robe had slipped down off of it while I was lost in the music and his warm touch had me melting into him. I leaned back and found myself pressed against his bare stomach.

My fingers brushed the keys again and he drew small patterns on my shoulder. His gentle touch seemed strange still, and I wondered if he had been like this with other girls. But I’d seen him with someone else before, the cute barmaid. There was nothing sweet or soft about what I saw when he was around her. I chose in that moment to believe that this was special, just for me.
