He rolled over in my bed and cracked an eye open.

“Good morning sweetheart.” he mumbled in a rough sleep filled voice.

I scowled at him, but deep down I didn’t mind the way he spoke to me. It was kinda nice, so long as he didn’t cuddle me again. He got a free pass that one time because, well, because Ididstab him. But there was only so much I’d let him get away with.

“Oh someone’s grumpy,” He pouted as he pushed himself up on his elbows. “Why are you here anyway? Did you miss me?”

“No.” I said flatly. “I can’t stand being in the house right now. All of this fake wedding bullshit is too much. And Lorenzo’s mood swings are getting out of hand.”

He frowned at me, “So you came here, and left our woman there with him?”

“She’s fine, or so she keeps saying. He lost it with her again last night, over nothing at all, but she won’t let me do anything. Fuck that woman drives me insane.”

I scrubbed my hand over my face and rolled my eyes. Lorenzo had gone crazy last night. He had ended up smashing the piano and had backhanded Nutmeg across the cheek for her ‘backtalk’. Sitting in that corner of the darkened room and just fucking watching was nearly impossible. I was so ashamed of myself for not helping her, but him finding me would have been so much worse. I just wish that she would let me do something.

“I’m worried.” he said, his features turning serious.

I leaned forward on the sofa and rested my elbows on my knees, “Me too.” I confessed.

His eyes sparkled with an emotion I couldn’t place, but I had a feeling I’d like the next words that came out of his mouth.

Lorenzo called me in to his office when I arrived at the house a few hours later. I was tempted to stay at my apartment when Toby went to work, but I knew I needed to be here, even just to appear like the persistently pissed off arsehole who only cared about taking over my stepfather’s gang.

“Sit.” he said, not bothering to look at me as he tapped the screen of his phone.

I ignored his demand and stood behind the chairs opposite him with my arms folded.

He eventually looked up at me and gave an irritated grunt.

“Sit your ass down Adonis.” he snapped.

“I’m good, what did you want?” I asked.

I knew I shouldn’t push him with how volatile he had been recently. I should be sucking up to him and going out of my way to prove myself like I had before I knew the truth about him, but now I couldn’t stop myself from being combative. Luckily it was on brand for me, so he wasn’t questioning it. He was just getting annoyed with it.

“We need to go suit shopping.” he said, standing from his desk.

I was sure he hadn’t planned on leaving yet, and this was his way of taking back control.

“Ok, my place?” I asked.

“Of course, I want the finest for my big day.” he said and strode around his desk.

“I’ll call Emilio, when do you want to visit? And how many?”

“Now.” he said, “Just us. I only want my best man up there with me.”

He gave me a wide smile that was all teeth and I held back a grimace. Was this his way of asking me to be his best man? I didn’t want that. But how could I say no without giving anything away.

“Great, I’ll make sure he free’s up his morning.” I said.

Lorenzo gave me a sharp look, “Is that the reaction I get? You should feel privileged son. I could have quite easily picked Grey as my best man.”

“I do, I just don’t do big displays of emotion, you know that.” I said.

“Make an exception for this.” he snapped.
