Whoever had knocked me to the floor was still on top of me. My eyes fell on Coop laying on the floor deathly still and a scream lodged in my throat. It was then that I realised who had taken me down. I looked up at Grey’s scarred face just as he slammed his fist into the side of my head a second time and everything turned black.

Fear rushed through me as I lay there beneath Grey. Pinned, blind, and unable to fight back. But a moment later his weight lifted off of me and I sucked in a long breath. I forced myself to roll in the direction that I hoped was the altar and took cover until I could see again. My vision was coming back in a spotty blur and as I tried to look across the church in preparation of it coming back, I found myself staring at the heels of large black shoes. I swallowed hard and shook my head over and over to try to clear it, to bring back my vision and stop the ringing in my ears. I’d never been taken down like this before, but then again, my focus had been on Lorenzo, no one else. Coop was supposed to handle it.

Fuck, Coop.

How had Grey known? Had someone told him? Or was he just insanely observant because he never trusted me. It didn’t matter right now though, because I was trapped and useless and I needed to change that as fast as I could. I still had the same end goal.Come on M, you can handle this.

I blinked furiously and reached out to grab the leg in front of me.

“Stay down babygirl.” The owner of the leg called out and I realised that it was Don stood before me. He was protecting me.

“No.” I shouted back and tugged on his leg to help myself up. My vision was finally coming back, and I was ready to throw myself into this. I looked to the place where Lorenzo had been stood a few moments ago and found that there was no dead body, I’d taken a shot, and I’d fucking missed. All because of Grey.

“Stay the fuck down. At least until I can get you out of here.” he said and stepped forward to attack whoever was coming towards us.

“I’m not leaving, I’m seeing this through.” I argued, but as he fought off one person another managed to pass him.

Frank stood above me. I rolled onto my back and found myself staring down the barrel of a gun. I snarled at him and kicked out, slamming my stiletto into his leg. He howled in pain and stumbled backwards as he pulled the trigger and I cried out. The bullet lodged itself into my leg and I cursed and gritted my teeth through the initial pain. It was fine. I was fine. I’d get Clive to patch me up later. Right now I needed to get the fuck up and fight.

The sound of a gunshot rang close to me again and I looked up just in time to watch Frank fall to the ground beside me. The gun he had used to shoot me fell from his hand and I pushed myself forward to reach out and grab it.

“Help me up.” I panted, looking up at Don.

He was staring down at me with a furious look in his eye.

“Stay down!” he roared.

Fine.

I wriggled around on the floor until I was in a better position to see what was going on and raised the gun. I searched for Lorenzo, but I couldn’t see him. My gaze caught on Yvette, and I froze. If anything happened to that woman, I would personally see that everyone here paid for it with slow, brutal torture.

Bold claim for a woman lying on the floor bleeding all over her wedding dress.

Yvette appeared to be rounding up all innocent parties with Freddie at her side ushering people out of the church. I saw Eden run out and sighed in relief. That was one person safe. What about the rest? I noticed Colette scurrying towards the exit and tracked her with Franks gun. Her husband had tried to kill me. She was a nasty, bitchy woman. But I couldn’t pull the trigger. Instead I watched her go and hoped that I never saw her fake-ass face again.

I glanced back at Yvette just as someone advanced on her. The man threw a wild punch to her shoulder, but she was barely phased, a moment later the back of her hand collided with his face, and he stumbled backwards. Freddie jumped in front of her, gun in hand and ready to attack, but he wasn’t fast enough.

I took my shot.

Blood splattered over Fred’s face, and he searched the church frantically until his eyes met mine and his lips tugged up into a relieved smile before he grabbed Yvette by the arm and hurried out of the church.

Who the hell was the guy I’d just shot? I prayed to god that it wasn’t a wolf. But no wolf would have targeted Yvette, so he had a be… what? A new Brother? Coop had mentioned something about a couple of new guys.

Cooper.

My eyes darted back to the place on the floor where I’d last seen him and found that he wasn’t there. There was blood staining the tiles, I didn’t know if I should be hopeful or not. I doubted anyone would have dragged his dead body away, but what if he was only just alive. I needed him to be fully alive. I couldn’t lose him.

People were taking cover behind the pews and from time to time a head would pop up and gunshots would ring out around the church. From what I could tell The Brotherhood were outnumbered, but the plan was never to kill them, and Charon knew that.Protect, not attack.I had to trust that my white knights wouldn’t do anything stupid unless they had to. Although with the way things seemed to be going, I had a feeling they’d have to.

My eyes landed on a figure standing still in the far corner of the room. I narrowed my gaze and my jaw clenched as I took in his amused expression. Lorenzo. I trained my gun on him, but it felt wrong. I didn’t want to shoot him from a distance. I wanted to be up close, watching the life drain from him.

I lowered the gun and attempted to pull myself up just as Giorgio appeared in front of Lorenzo. He raised his hands and less than a second later dropped to the floor. Lorenzo came back into view, holding a gun and smiling smugly.

A blur of green fabric came flying towards him screaming like a banshee. Gina threw herself at Lorenzo with her fists flying. But he simply raised his gun and pulled the trigger. Grey’s sister fell with a dramatic spray of blood and an outraged scream fell from my lips. He caught my eye, smirked, then tipped his head as though this was a fun little game.

I pushed to my feet and fell back down instantly. I inspected my leg and realised that blood was flowing from the wound at a rapid speed. I’d never manage to stand if I lost too much blood. I tugged at the skirt of my dress until scraps of fabric came off in my hand and wrapped them tightly around my leg. It was nowhere near good enough, but it would have to do.

“He killed your sister” I heard a woman scream and looked up.
