Charon’s words felt like a punch to the stomach. I guessed he’d heard what happened last night, no doubt all the gangs in Westeroak now knew about my departure from The Brotherhood, but surely he didn’t believe that the proposal was real?

I typed out a quick reply and hit send.

Megan

It isn’t what it looks like.

His response came through a minute later.

C

Sure it isn’t.

My stomach twisted and I pushed my bowl as far away from me as I could, I wasn’t hungry anymore. I needed to deal with this. I needed to go and speak with Charon. Now.

I pushed out of my chair, grabbed my phone, and headed to the door. Cooper jumped up and stood in my way.

“What is it?” he whispered.

I frowned at him. How did he-

“Your face, sort it out before you go anywhere. I can read you well, and so can he.” he warned, and I took a slow breath.

I guessed the emotions that I felt inside were showing on my face.

I wrinkled my nose and adjusted a strand of hair that had fallen into my face before settling on what I hoped was a blank expression. Cooper nodded approvingly and stepped away from the door, letting me pass through it with a gentle squeeze of my shoulder.

“Call me, if you need me.” he said softly, and I walked away down the hall.

I walked through the door to the garage and grabbed my car keys. I’d managed to escape this far unseen, or so I hoped. The new car that Lorenzo had purchased for me sat shiny and new in the furthest corner of the garage and I scowled at it as I approached it. I wanted my Mercedes back, but he’d made sure I couldn’t have it.

I climbed into the Audi and clicked the button on my keys that opened the garage door. I sent a quick text to Lorenzo telling him that I needed to go into the city to myoldoffice to pick up a few things, and that I’d be back later. I hated that I needed to tell him where I was going, but I knew that if I didn’t, Coop would get the brunt of it.

I sped down the driveway, through the gate, and far away from the house, making my way to the other side of Westeroak. I pulled up directly outside the house that I’d visited not that long ago and jumped out of my car. I stormed to the front door and hammered my fist against it.

The door swung open, and Yvette stood before me, frowning and crossing her arms.

“You’re not coming in.” she said resolutely, and I had to admire her for the way she handled me. But it wouldn’t work.

“Eve, if you don’t let me in, and let me explain, I will happily stand here and cause the biggest scene you’ve ever witnessed. I’m quite well known for my theatrics, so I’d move aside if I were you.” I said and raised my brows at her in a challenge.

She lifted her chin and looked me up and down, then smiled at me as she stepped to one side and granted me access to her house.

“Don’t make me regret this. Ron might be the big bad wolf, but I’m the one who tamed him, I can handle you little Vixen.”

I smiled at her use of Toby’s nickname for me,andthe fact she had bigger balls than me, and strolled past her. She closed the door and Charon came marching out of the lounge and into the hall where we were stood.

“You’re not welcome here. Evie, go upstairs please love.” he said in his deep, gravelly voice.

“Go back in the lounge you big brute and listen to what she has to say.” Yvette said and bustled her husband back where he had come from.

I followed them inside and found Toby sat on the sofa, his messy blonde hair was pulled up into a bun that matched his dads, and I felt a tug in my chest as he looked up at me. He was furious. At me?

“It’s an act.” I blurted as I stood in the centre of their lounge.

Charon had sat down in his armchair and Yvette was perched on the side of it.

His brows shot up and he shook his head in disbelief.
