“Sure it is.” Charon said sarcastically, he wasn’t going to back down easily, and I understood that. I’d have been the same way.

“Please, I had to agree. He’s threatening people that I care about, and after what he did to you,” I looked at Toby, “I’m worried that they aren’t just threats. He nearly killed a woman last night when I ran,” Toby’s mouth dropped open. “And when I took the ring off this morning he threatened my best friend, who has taken enough hits in the past few weeks. I promise you it is entirely an act, I hate him.” I turned my attention back to Charon, who’s expression was annoyingly unreadable, “I want, need, you to believe me, but honestly, if you chose not to, I don’t care. The only person who’s thoughts I really care about are Toby’s.” I said, slightly regretting my disrespectful outburst towards the end, but it was done now.

Charon’s face remained blank, and I glanced at Toby. He shook his head and sighed, then pushed himself up from the sofa. I gasped and rushed towards him, ready to support him if he fell. He chuckled and slung his arm around my shoulder but didn’t put any weight on me.

“I told you so.” he said, aiming his words towards his father.

“I know how dangerous he is.” Charon began, and we all turned to face him. He leaned forward in his chair, placing both of his heavy booted feet on the floor with a thud. “And I can see it in your eyes that you’re scared of him. You should be, that’s smart. My son never doubted you for a second, it was only me. Ihaveto be suspicious, it’s what keeps me in my position, so please forgive me. I can see how strongly you care for my son. So what do you plan to do next?” he asked, his lips lifting into a smile as he eyes narrowed in question.

Toby squeezed my arm where his hand was resting and I looked up at him, relief washing over my body as I bathed in the way he was looking at me. He hadn’t doubted me, and I loved that about him. He pressed a gentle kiss to my head, and I looked back at his parents. The terrifying gang leader, and the equally as terrifying - now that I’d seen her feisty side - woman.

“I have a few ideas, but I’m not settling on anything yet.” I said to Charon.

“Well you can always call me for help. My wolves may need a little convincing, but if you need us…” Charon said, trailing off, not needing to continue, and I’d never felt more supported in my life. Not just by him, but by this family. I want to be part of this family.

“I don’t need supervision anymore, so I’m going back to my apartment today.” I explain to Meg when my parents finally leave us alone. Dad had some business to handle at headquarters, and mum was busying herself with laundry.

“I was going to text you this morning, but I guessed you’d show up here today, so...”

When the news had come this morning, I had brushed it off instantly. I didn’t need to doubt her at all. I knew what it was, but Dad didn’t. I tried to explain it to him, but he wasn’t having it. So we argued, and mum got upset. She had taken dads side in it, saying that Meg couldn’t be trusted because we barely knew her. But Ididknow her, and I wanted to jump in and defend her.

My girl didn’t need defending though. She was a force to be reckoned with, and although things were a mess right now, and she was scared every day, I knew that she would be strong enough to get through it all and I’d be by her side the entire way, however I could.

“That’s great news,” she said, “I recon I’ve got enough time to help you with the move back there if you want?”

“I’d love that. Although it’s only a suitcase of clothes and probably around twenty frozen home cooked meals.” I smiled and rolled my eyes.

Mum had been saving extra portions of each meal for a while now in preparation for my move back to my place, not that I needed it, I could easily cook for myself, but I’dneverturn down mum’s food.

“Let’s go and pack then.”

She rose from the sofa and tugged on my hand. I slowly followed her, I wasn’t in as much pain as I’d been in before, but I knew my limits, and I knew that I had to take everything slowly. She paused in the hallway, and I made my way past her and headed to the furthest door. I’d been sleeping downstairs in a makeshift bedroom in what would usually be the dining room. Mum and dad rarely used the room, not unless they were hosting a dinner, their usual meals were eaten at the small table in the kitchen.

Meg followed me into the room and perched on the edge of the foldout bed that I’d been sleeping on.

“This doesn’t feel very comfy.” she stated, and her brows pulled together.

“It was ok, but I’m excited to get back to my own bed,FuuuuckI’ve missed my own bed.” I groaned and she laughed lightly.

“Do you want me to-.” She pointed to my suitcase, and I shook my head.

“I’ve got it.” I assured her, but she didn’t look convinced. Her eyes narrowed in on me and she folded her arms.

I ignored the way she was looking at me, like she was waiting to prove me wrong, and lifted the empty case onto the mattress. I picked up a few items and began to toss them inside. I could feel Megs eyes burning into me as I kept bending to pick up items from the floor.I’d made such a mess here, I hated it.

I moved across to the other side of the room and when I came back, she had one of my t shirts in her hands. She began to fold it and placed it back into the case.

“You don’t have to do that; I’ll just chuck it all in the wash when I get home.” I said as I threw a pair of grey sweats on top of the neatly folded t shirt.

“I need to do something helpful, watching you is so painful.” she whined and pouted, and a low laugh fell from my lips.

I doubled over, clutching my stomach where the healing wound was, and groaned. Why the fuck does laughing have to hurt me so much right now.

“Sit your ass down.” she said and guided me to the bed.
