My stomach sank at his words, I craved the lifestyle that I’d grown used to and I hated that I’d not given it up on my own terms. I exited the office and headed up the stairs to find the dress that had been selected for me.

***

I swiped my usual deep red lipstick across my lips before getting out of the car. Lorenzo had chosen a midnight blue dress to compliment his suit. It had a low back and a high neckline. It made me look every bit the elegant woman. All about appearances.

“Must you always wear that shade?” he asked as I rounded the car.

“I like it.” I said dismissively and walked past him to the building where we would be meeting the photographer.

A tall woman with thick rimmed glasses and a tight blonde ponytail met us at the doors and introduced herself as Alana. I gave her a polite smile and Lorenzo confirmed whatever details he had given her in their emails. She then led us to a large room where a powder blue backdrop was set up with huge lights angled towards it. Not that I cared what the images ended up looking like, but I was glad she hadn’t selected a backdrop that would clash with my hair.

“Ok happy couple, you both look incredible, so let’s get to it,” Alana began, “I’ll run through a few test shots, and then I’ll get you posing, I’m sure you’ll both be naturals though.” she said brightly and ushered me to stand in front of the lights.

A short time later Alana let out a frustrated sigh, “Megan, is something wrong? Are you in pain? Time of the month? Because you look absolutely miserable, this is supposed to mark one of the most special occasions of your life, come on hon, suck it up and show me how in love you are.”

I bit the inside of my cheek to stop myself from laughing. “Sorry, I’ll try harder.” I lied.

Lorenzo knew it was a lie and his smile slipped as he glared down at me, and I noticed Alana awkwardly turn away from us.

I looked up at Lorenzo, “I told you, you won’t get a nice picture.” I murmured so that Alana couldn’t hear us, she was now fiddling with one of the huge lights, probably realising that we were not actually the happy couple she had presumed we would be.

“I guess I was wrong to think that you could be reasonable and cooperative. You’re lucky that I’ve sent Grey off to handle other business.”

I smiled smugly at the knowledge that my friend was safe once more, but that smile quickly dropped as a flash of something silver caught my eye. Lorenzo had pulled a small knife from his pocket and if the manic look in his eye was anything to go by it seemed that he had no issue with using it in front of the woman who he had hired to photograph us.

He grabbed my shoulder and twisted me around so that he was placed slightly behind me and pushed the tip of the blade into the exposed skin in the centre of my spine. I felt the sting of it piercing skin and froze. I was unarmed, why the fuck had I not thought about this.

“Smile, amore mio, or I’ll make this a lot worse than it has to be. I can keep going until I’ve decorated every inch of your perfect pearly skin with pretty little slices. Maybe I’ll carve my name.” he whispered into my ear.

I exhaled slowly and nodded, pushing his words out of my head and thinking about Toby, thoughts of him were the only thing that could make me smile right now. And I needed to smile, because the last thing I wanted was a permanent reminder of Lorenzo carved into my skin.

“I think Miss Fields is ready now.” Lorenzo announced as he twisted the blade against my back, the sensation of it sending a shiver of dread down my spine.

Lorenzo noticed and leaned close to my ear again, “I bet if I lifted this dress, I’d find your panties completely drenched. It’s been so long that I almost forgot how turned on you get when I make it hurt.”

I heaved slightly and covered it with a cough. My pussy was drier than the Sahara. I had no idea if he truly believed that I didn’t despise him with every fibre of my being. Maybe he thought I only hated him a little, enough to still want to fuck him. I’d need to be clearer about this, but not right now, not while he had a knife carving little marks into my back while I held back the hisses of pain that begged to escape my lips and smiled up at him like I was completely infatuated with him.I amaze myself with my acting skills sometimes.

Once Alana had cooed over us even more now that I was smiling and had snapped off enough pictures, we were free to go. Lorenzo shrugged off his jacket and slung it over my shoulders in what would look like a caring gentlemanly gesture, but it was clear to me that he had only done it to conceal what he had done to my back. I knew the damage was minimal, and probably looked worse than it was, but I still hated that I’d stood there and taken it.

I followed him out of the building. It was early evening, and the air was beginning to cool slightly. We headed to his car and travelled in silence for a while, until Lorenzo pulled up outside a restaurant that I’d never seen before. It must have been new; I knew these parts of the city like the back of my hand.

“What are we doing?” I asked. Wondering if Lorenzo had some business to attend to.

“Having dinner amore mio. It was very hard to get this reservation, this place is very exclusive, but that is a perk of being with me, I can get us anything we desire.” he answered, tossing an arrogant smirk my way.

How the fuck had I found that look so hot on him before?

“I’d rather just eat at home.” I said bluntly and folded my arms.

“Amore,” he chuckled, “I have given the girls the evening off, and you don’t know how to cook. Don’t be silly, let’s go and eat.” he said, sounding so reasonable, but I didn’t want to.

“I’ll order takeout then.” I retorted.

“Megan,” he snapped, his tone switching faster than ever before, “If you don’t get your ass out of this car and into that restaurant so help me god, I will have every single person you care about killed, do not test me again. I am not making threats anymore. This time it’s a promise.”

I turned my head to face him and the moment our eyes locked I felt it. Up until now he had been playing with me, attempting to inflict fear, but I’d been slowly pushing his buttons and now, now he was being deadly serious.

“Fine.” I spat the word at him and unclipped my seatbelt.
