“Hey Mills, how was opening night?” I asked.

“Exhausting, the rest of kitchen took me out for drinks after, it was fun, why are you calling me so early?” she said, sounding a little pissed off at her wakeup call. It wasn’t even that early.

“I’m so proud of you, head chef,” I beamed as I stared at the high ceiling. “My girl came in last night, she was impressed.”

“That’s back on?” she asked, suddenly sounding more awake.

“Yeah, no, well, kinda. It’s complicated.” I said and ran my fingers through my hair.

“Explain.” she demanded.

I filled Emilia in on the situation with me and Meg, what Lorenzo was doing, the engagement, her big messy life, my new friend, my hopes for our future. She was the one person I trusted outside of all of it with the entire truth.

“Fuck,” she breathed. “You could write a book with all of that drama.” she exclaimed then sighed heavily. “You think it’ll all work out?”

“I do. She’s incredible Mills, if anyone can endure that piece of shit and come out the other side winning it’ll be her, and she has Don, even if she’s beyond stubborn when it comes to his help.” I said with a wide smile.

I loved Don, and he so clearly loved Meg. She would come around eventually.

“Wait, isn’tDonthe one who attacked you?” she asked.

“Yep. Friendships bloom in the strangest places don’t they.” I joked. “I know it seems weird, but he’s actually a good guy, a bit emotionally damaged, but with his family that isn’t shocking.” I explained.

“Hmm, if you say so. Whatever makes you happy Bobo.” She didn’t sound convinced. Emilia didn’t like anyone though, except me, but who could ever hate me.

Lorenzo D’Angelo hates me.

“They make me happy,” I said, “And when I’m better, and all of this drama is over, I’ll be bringing them to your restaurant and showing off my awesome bestie!” I said, stroking her ego.

“Mhm,” she hummed, “well give me a head’s up. Your parents have a reservation tonight, should I be worried?”

“No, no one would ever come after Dad when he’s out with Mum. D’Angelo isn’t after him anyway, just me.” I rolled my eyes. My life really had taken a dramatic turn.

“Good, well, stay safe Bo, come over soon?”

“Soon.” I agreed before the line went dead.

My stomach sank as I realised how much I missed my friend. I’d missed her opening night at her new restaurant and that made me feel like shit. But Ihadbeen stabbed, so if there was ever a good excuse, I think that was it.

I sat up and scanned the room. I’d been shocked by how comfortable I’d found myself here, but when I really thought about it, it did make sense. I knew that I was safe here, and I wasn’t stupid enough to think that my safety didn’t matter in the long run. What would my girl be fighting for if I went and got myself killed?

A knock at the door startled me and I frowned as I considered opening it. Only a select few people knew I was here, but who else knew that this place existed?

I remained sitting on the bed until the knock sounded again, but this time it was accompanied by a woman’s voice.Mywoman’s voice.

“Toby, it’s only me.” she said.

I sprung up out of the bed and bounded towards the door, when I flung it open, she took a step backwards and almost fell down the stairs.

“Woah.” she exclaimed, “Good morning.” she grinned as her eyes dragged down my body and lingered just below my waist. “Does Adonis know you sleep naked in his luxury sheets?” she asked and stepped towards me.

I snaked my arm around her and pulled her inside the apartment.

“Does he know you did too?” I countered and she batted my chest as a faint blush spread across her cheeks.

I leaned down to kiss her, but she placed a finger against my lips then gave me an awkward look.

“I need to talk to you, but I don’t have long.” she said and pulled her bottom lip between her teeth. I grasped her chin and gently tugged it back out and she rolled her eyes at me.
