“We’ll see.”

Lorenzo

The shallow rise and fall of her chest comforts me, it grounds me. She looks peaceful, her face is relaxed. She doesn’t look at me like she wishes I would drop dead at her feet, not while she’s like this.

When she wakes, she will put on that mask, and she will fight me with every stubborn bone in her body. Why did I have to fall in love with such a feisty creature. It will take her longer than I’d like to come back to me, to get over it all.

I watch her sleep as I stand in the doorway to the guest bedroom. The thought that fills my head is one that I’m not fond of, but I’d weighted up my options and this was what that I had.

I love this woman; I love who she is. I knew it the moment I first laid eyes on her. When she killed that pathetic gang leader, I knew that she was the one I wanted.Needed.Selene had been a confident, stunning, wonderful woman, but she didn’t have that dark blood lust that I needed in my partner. M had it. She had it all. Only now she was aiming that dark side at me, she wasn’t joining me in it anymore, not in the way that I wanted.

I’d have to break her down. Take away the parts of her that I love, the parts that make her dangerous.

One day I’d build it all back up, once I was sure that she wouldn’t turn on me. Until then, I’d have to work on making her weak and hope that she didn’t end up repulsing me in the process.

I fight the urge to enter the room. I long to touch her, to crawl into that bed and taste her. Not yet though, it will be far more satisfying when she begs for that pleasure.

Instead, I softly close the door, and go back to my bedroom. It’s late, she won’t wake up for a few hours yet, so I’ll sleep, for now, and rise before her and wait. I lay down in my bed, in my thin sleep shorts and force myself to drift into a light sleep.

I’m already showered and dressed in a white shirt and grey trousers by the time I hear the guest bedroom door click open. I quickly check my reflection - flawless, as always -, then exit my room. I time it perfectly to meet her at the top of the stairs where I find her wearing red button-down striped pyjamas and I can’t hold back from frowning at her.

“Why are you not wearing one of the sets I bought for you?” I ask irritably.

She scowls at me before silently moving to go down the stairs.

I stop her and hold my arm out to her, “You know that you should only wear the finest clothes, even to sleep in.” I chastise her, then change my tone. “But one night in those shouldn’t hurt, how did you sleep?”

She looked down at my arm and glared at me.

“We are not doing this,” She waved her hand up and down between us. “I’m not playing happy couples with you.”

“Cooper is in the office,” I grasped her hand and hooked it in to place on my arm, “I don’t think you want me paying him a visit before breakfast, do you amore mio?” I said in a threatening whisper.

She sucked in a sharp breath and her hand tightened almost painfully around my arm.

“Leave Cooper out of this.” she hissed.

“Behave yourself then. Come on now, let’s go and enjoy our breakfast.” I gave her a tight smile and she ground her teeth.

“Fine, I canbehave myself, for now.” she said, and began to pull me down the stairs. “But don’t for one second start to think I’m doing it because I want to.”

I pulled her back to my side, and she groaned, then I made my way down the stairs with her held closer.

“Maybe tomorrow you could try a smile.” I whispered, and she pursed her lips.Yeah, that was wishful thinking.

I guided her to the dining room and pulled out her usual chair for her. She sat down in it, her spine stiff and an icy look on her face as she watched me seat myself in my own chair. Anette, one of our staff, entered the room with a tray holding our morning coffee’s and silently placed them on the table before us before hurrying out of the room. M reached for her cup and added a single spoonful of sugar and began to slowly stir, dragging the spoon around the edge of the cup to create an offensive noise that made my jaw clench. I quickly released it and glared at her. The corner of her mouth tipped up a fraction and she dropped her gaze to her cup, continuing to slowly stir.

Anette came back into the room with a second tray which held today’s newspaper and a selection of foods for our breakfast. The woman placed the tray between us and left the room, this time closing the door behind her. I reached to the tray and grabbed a croissant, placed it on a small plate and passed it to M. She looked at my offering and shook her head, then grabbed the bowl of oats, yogurt, and berries.Mybowl of oats, yogurt, and berries.

“I’m glad to see you’re making healthier choices today il mio tesoro.” I said, and she pushed her tongue into her cheek.

I wasn’t going to rise to her deliberate attempt to irritate me. She knew that the bowl had been for me, the same breakfast that I ate daily.

“Yep.” She said simply and shoved a spoon into the bowl. She didn’t lift it back out though. Instead she reached for her cup of coffee and lifted it to her lips and took a slow, noisy slurp.
