“Try again.” he snapped.

Paul wailed and snatched his hand out of the fire when Lorenzo released it and held it close to his chest. The smell of burning flesh filled the air around us and I placed my knife and fork down, my appetite completely ruined.

“Vipers.” Paul said quietly and scrunched his face up in agony.

Lorenzo tutted and looked at me, “We need to exterminate the snakes, for good.” he said.

I nodded in agreement. If I wanted The Brotherhood, I’d need to keep them safe, so I’d be making arrangements to take the remaining Vipers down as soon as possible.

“What did they want to know?” Lorenzo asked Paul.

“Anything, anything I could find out.” Paul said.

I believed he was telling the truth, The Vipers weren’t very smart, they’d cling to anything they could to try to get to the top. Their stupidity was one of the reasons they they’d never make it.

“What did you find out? What do they know?”

“Nothing, I was on my way to our meeting, I told them nothing, I barely know anything, I was going to wing it, elaborate on the small things I do know.” Paul said as tears tracked down his face.

I glanced around, keeping my expression guarded and dark. The staff in the restaurant were now giving us a wide berth and the two tables that had been filled with people when we arrived had now taken themselves inside. No one tried to stop Lorenzo, and no one seemed to be calling the police. The man was untouchable. For now.

“What do you know?” Lorenzo asked.

“You have a meeting with Andreas Alvaro next week up by the mountain shooting range, I don’t know why, but I know that a meeting with him isn’t easy to get.”

“How do you know?” Lorenzo said in a quiet voice.

He was angrier than I thought. He only ever used the quiet tones when he was about to explode.

“I hacked one of your guy’s phones, the tall one with the beard and tattoo’s. He was drunk, I took his phone, it was too easy. But I’ll forget what I know, I’ll stay out of your business. I promise. Mr D’Angelo please let me go, please.” Paul begged.

Lorenzo stood up and buttoned his suit jacket. I did the same and pulled out my wallet and placed a pile of notes under the ashtray on the table. There was far more there than the cost of our meals, the staff here deserved it for putting up with this.

“Forget everything.” Lorenzo said darkly and turned away from the man.

“I will, thank you Lorenzo.” Paul said and stood up.

I froze.

Lorenzo spun around to face him and the look on his face was pure rage.

“How dare you call me that. It’s Mr D’Angelo to you. Disrespectful pezzo di merda.” he bellowed.

Before Paul could respond, no doubt with a torrent of apologetic pleas, Lorenzo grabbed him by the collar, punched him in the stomach, and slammed his head down into the burning pit on the table. Paul screamed as the flames burned the side of his face and Lorenzo smirked down at him, keeping his hold firm.

I watched in silence, folding my arms over my chest and tapping my foot impatiently. I was getting a real glimpse of the man I was planning to destroy, and I was taking in everything, but I couldn’t drop my mask right now. I had to keep up my grouchy attitude. Especially when Lorenzo was happily burning people’s faces off.

He looked up at me with a manic look in his eyes and I raised my brows at him.

He released the man, who fell to the floor in a puddle of what I guessed was his own piss, and smoothed down his jacket.

“Let’s go, Amore mio is probably wondering where I am.” he said, smiling as though nothing had happened.

I looked down at the man who was definitely unconscious, potentially dead, not that I’d be getting close enough to check, and grimaced at his face. If hehadsurvived it, there would be no fixing that. I looked over my shoulder into the restaurant and saw that the young girl was on the phone. I guessed she was calling an ambulance for the guy. I gave her an apologetic shrug and moved away from the table, following Lorenzo down the street.

“I hope you were taking notes there son.” he said when I caught up with him.

“I was.” I confirmed. “I’m sure your lessons will help me a lot in the future.”The very close future.
