“If he’s gonna call himself living at the compound, then why can’t they feed him?” Stella asked, opening the double doors of the pantry.

“I think they do,” I said.

She whirled around, eyes narrowed, “He. Ate. My. Cereal.”

I couldn’t help the laughter that bubbled up my throat. “Welcome to parenthood. Every time you turn around, something that you bought for yourself is gone.”

Stella rolled her eyes, “If this is what having kids is like, I don’t want any.”

I looked over her shoulder to survey the damage. “Who knew the best birth control would end up being your big brother?”

“No joke,” Stella agreed.

She held up crossed fingers, “This is a no-fly zone.”

I grabbed a bag of tortilla chips and a packet of taco seasoning from a shelf.

“Tacos?” I asked.

“Sounds perf,” Stella grinned, giving me a final squeeze and heading into the den. “You wanna watch a movie?”

“Sure,” I agreed, pulling hamburger meat from the fridge.

Thank God Lucky wasn’t a vampire, or he probably would have eaten that too.

“Red Sparrow?” Stella asked.

I remembered the plot being something about a Russian spy and cleared my throat. “How about something a little lighter?” I asked.

“Sure,” Stella said. “I’ll look.”

I shredded and diced and kept up with Stella’s running commentary on all things Netflix.

My cell rang.

Not a number that I knew.

Skillet in hand, I answered and propped the phone on my shoulder.

“Hello?”

“Anna?” a feminine voice asked.

“Yes….” I drew out, racking my brain how one of the girls who came through the office had gotten this number.

“Hey, it’s Layla, Jenna’s friend. You know, Talon’s Jenna?”

“Uh, yeah, I know her,” I said, even more confused than I’d been a moment before.

“Cool. Hope it’s okay that I called. I got your number from Cassie who got it from Lucky.”

“Sure,” I said. “Totally cool. Has something happened to Gate?”

“Oh, no, not that I know of anyway. I’m calling about the baby shower.”

“Gate’s having a baby shower?” I asked, my breath leaving me in awhoosh.

“Gate?” Layla laughed. “No, it’s for Jenna. We’re throwing Jenna a baby shower, and chica is not exactly rolling in friends.”
